Madonna Plans Malawi Benefit

Madonna is planning a star-filled Live Aid-style concert as a benefit in September for her Raising Malawi charity, according to England's Sunday Mirror. The publication quotes a source as saying, "Plans are in place to make this the biggest fundraiser the world has ever seen. Madonna is throwing everything into it. She knows the bigger the event the more money will be raised." The superstar plans to to give away 60,000 free tickets to fans for the stadium concert in Blantyre, Malawi and plans are being made to have the concert broadcast worldwide, much like Live Aid, the 1985 fundraising concert that raised $225 million for African famine relief at which she performed.

Madonna has adopted two children from the impoverished nation, 5-year-old Mercy, and 4-year-old David, and is building a school there.

The bias here is totally unbelievable. Elton sang at Rush's wedding, whatever you think about Rush he has never advocated for the persecution of gay and lesbians or called for their death like Malawi, yet Elton gets his ass kicked left and right by you hypocrites. Here you have a woman who is going to give Malawi MILLIONS of dollars so they can continue their persecution of gays (as in contrast with Rush's wedding, it was Rush that paid Elton, not the other way around). If you frowned on Elton, fine, but what is the excuse here? And this situation is a hundred times worst, we are talking about people's lives, liberty, and human rights. Is it because they are black? (Reverse discrimination) That they can get away with it? Or is it because Madonna is better than Elton? I really do not understand this hypocrisy, it is really pathetic.

Madonna did speak out against the hatred towards homosexuals in Malawi and petitioned and urged the government to release the male couple that was being held in jail. She's trying to improve the place. It's one person and it won't happen over night. She has some power and that country knows it. To not donate money or support her cause is each individual's prerogative. It'll be successful since everything this woman does is generally big. I understand the anger that it's for a country that hates homosexuals so its a catch 22.

@ Robert And what exactly is wrong with being eurocentric (I'm guessing you mean white) and middle to upper class. Would it be better if I were black and poor? Would that make you feel better? Post-modernism is sooo over, sweetie! Call the 1960's, I think they might need you there.

Please tell me why I should give even a penny to this urinal drain of a country, which is right up there with Uganda in hurting its gay citizens? Maybe Malawi's evangelical god will feed its starving citizens?

"What, exactly, were you doing from Marietta -- and all the other hometowns listed here -- to fight this decision in Malawi?" Certainly NOT raising millions for a state that persecutes gays and lesbians ans has clearly stated that they will continue to do so whether we like it or not.

She wants to buy some more of their children but doesn't want to use her own money, so she's holding this benefit concert.

http://www.madonna.com/news/title/madonna-responds-to-malawi-court-decision Madonna DID respond to Malawi's LGBT injustice -- loudly. Perhaps if we paid more attention to and supported those who are on our side, we'd be farther along in our fight for equality. What, exactly, were you doing from Marietta -- and all the other hometowns listed here -- to fight this decision in Malawi? Why give money for the Raising Malawi charity? Because a society full of educated people who no longer have to fear death and poverty is more likely to embrace difference. Think about it.
