Lindsay Lohan, Prison Rights Advocate?

LINDSEY LOHAN JAIL X390 (VIDEOGRAB) | ADVOCATE.COM

The ACLU wants Lindsay Lohan’s help shedding light on the deplorable conditions in L.A. County's jail system.

In an open letter to the Herbie Fully Loaded star, the ACLU asks her to use her celebrity as a vehicle to expose the atrocities facing inmates behind bars. The ACLU specifically mentions prisoners facing embarrassing group strip searches, verbal harassment, and refusal of necessary medications.

Lohan’s experience will differ slightly from the general prison experience because she’s being isolated from other inmates. But the ACLU sees this as an opportunity for Lohan to start rebuilding her reputation — and to bring attention to an issue this isn’t often covered by the media.

I don't think Lindsay should be advocating for anything but a bed in a rehab center when she completes her little stint. Then perhaps she could speak to young women about eating disorders and drug/alcohol dependence, as for the penial system it's a prison not a country club. Basic needs should be met, but we also have law abiding citizens living in squallor maybe we should help them first.

Hopefully this is the wake-up call that Lohan needed and that she uses this time to reflect on what her life has become and how she is going to turn her life around. It's good that the ACLU has looked to Lohan to bring focus to the problems of our "corrections" system that is still more of a penitentiary where punishment seems to be more the focus than a change in behavior; which is what we really want the goal to be. It would be nice to see the system set up more like drug courts for behavioral problems like child abuse and neglect, mental health neglect, physical neglect, theft, etc. In the drug court model, offenders are connected to a court and are mandated to engage in treatment. If they don't engage in therapeutic services then there are consequences, i.e. jail time. This would be highly effective for a lot of non-violent crimes and for child abuse and neglect. For violent crimes we need many long term care facilities to keep society safer and to provide services for offenders.

Seriously Mark, have you been in that prison? I haven't but that picture doesn't look deplorable to me. I repeat, it's not a fucking resort!! If you don't like prison- don't break the fucking law asshole! The hard working taxpayers pay enough money to babysit criminals as it is. I usually agree with the ACLU but not this time. If you want to see a deplorable prison go to Turkey!

I don't think a person who ignores court-ordered alcohol classes (until doing them half-assed at the last minute) and later sent to jail for violation is a good representation for "jail is like, hard" PSAs, much less asking the State of California to change the penitentiary system. C'mon! I'm not denying the pen has some eye-raising methods, but I'd consider someone else than Lohan.

Yes we must treat the criminals in jail much better. We need to provide them with flatscreen tv's and stereos and comfy chairs and weights to lift. Especially the weights. We want our criminals to be strong now. The criminals need to be treated with love and respect and kisses. Unless of course they committed a hate crime. They they need to be sent to the dungeon.

Seriously, the ACLU is scrapping at the bottom of the barrel if they get her to represent their cause; can't they do better than that? This stupid woman drove drunk and skipped out of her probabtion, she deserves to get the Linda Blair treatment in prison.

Those who say "it's not supposed to be a resort" have no idea of what they're talking about. There should be basic, humane standards in place for prisoners. The California prison system has been a mess for many years. Serious changes are needed.

It's not supposed to be a fucking resort and you are not supposed to enjoy it. All the more reason not to break the fucking law!
