Bragman Talks About Coming Out Show

HOWARD BRAGMAN X390

Coming out guru and celebrity publicist Howard Bragman talked to Entertainment Weekly about his new show, which will help famous people come out of the closet, “an opportunity to change the world a little,” he says.

In the interview, Bragman talks about the differences between coming out in the music world (ie. Adam Lambert) vs. coming out in the acting world (ie. Neil Patrick Harris), which he suggests is still a bit more challenging.

Ever wearing his publicist hat, he already has suggested a scandal within the pilot. He hopes a straight celebrity will fake coming out, just for the publicity.

“That would be a great scandal,” he says. “I’d love that, are you kidding? Robert Redford would end up making a movie about it. You’re talking to a publicist here, okay? That would be beyond my wildest dreams if some young, hot stud pretends he’s gay to get on the show! I hope that happens. And I hope he’s a stud and he hits on the host of the show.”

Great, instead of making coming out an easy and natural process, now they are going to make it a whole spectacle of it. This wont help people come out of the closet at all. I bet is going to look all "Intervention-ish", with the whole fake dramatic editing that reality shows are known for. I hope it fails. I always have question the ethics of "reality" shows about addictions. There is no reason why this show is going to be different.

If they are going to 'fake' being gay, I would love to see them 'fake' getting gay-bashed, or 'fake' having their military career ended, or 'fake' being forcibly divorced.

While I hardly think that anyone needs a show to help facilitate the process, the fact that Bragman encourages lying and faking being gay only exacerbates the problem. Everyone will think "being gay" is a fad, the latest craze. It's hard enough to come out without someone making fun of the process by lessening its impact, its importance and its real-life consequences.

I think it will be a very short lived show, I can't imagine too many celebrities would risk coming out just for his show when they haven't been willing to risk it already on their own.
