Ryan Murphy to Direct Wicked Film?

IDINA MENZEL KRISTIN CHENOWETH WICKED X390

In what could be a musical theater leek’s wildest dreams, Ryan Murphy is one of four directors currently in discussions with Wicked producer Marc Platt to direct the film version of the popular musical.

Having already cast Wicked alumni Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth on Glee, the Murphy/Wicked stars seem to have already begun aligning.

The film adaptation is in the very early stages of production and no definite answers are coming in the near future.

"I think it's one of those things where they have invited some people to come in and give them their take, but they are in absolutely no hurry to get that movie made because the show is such a huge success," Murphy says.

In the meantime, Murphy says fans can look forward to a Britney Spears-themed episode of Glee next season.

Goodie...a heavily franchized, commercial product (err, show) being transformed into a format that is even more franchized and commercial than theatre...film! If they were doing a dramatic adaptation of the novel and not the musical, then I'd be pleased. But no, sappy pop songs sell where dramatic integrity and depth go unnoticed. I hate pop culture sometimes :( No offense to any Wicked fans, I'm all for "to each his own". Just my opinion, sorry for ranting.

Aren't Kristen and Idina, like, 50? Why not just cast Meryl Streep and Helen Ready?

If Ryan Murphy directs, then Lea Michele is a shoo-in for Elphaba.

This sounds like a horrible idea. I hate Glee, its annoying and campy and cheesy. Wicked needs a director who can make it what it should be, not someone who's going to destroy it.

Sorry to say but if anyone but Kristen and Irina is cast as the main characters, why make this. I know it is running with others in those parts around the country but those women MADE those roles their own. Don't do the "Hollywood" thing and put someone in there just to sell tickets. People will come to see these two, there is NO doubt about that.
