Anne Rice Quits Christianity

ANNE RICE CHRISTOPHER RICE X390 (GETTY) | ADVOCATE.COM

Anne Rice is no longer a Christian.

The best-selling author of Interview With a Vampire and mother to novelist Christopher Rice posted on her Facebook page that she’s left the religion because she refuses to be “antigay,” “antifeminist,” and “anti-Democrat.”

Rice wrote, “It’s simply impossible for me to 'belong' to this quarrelsome, hostile, disputatious, and deservedly infamous group. For ten years, I’ve tried. I’ve failed. I’m an outside. My conscience will allow nothing else.”

“In the name of Christ, I quit Christianity and being Christian.”

In 2004, Rice announced in Newsweek that she from that point forward, she would “write only for the Lord.” The author continued to be a vocal supporter of gay rights while touting her Christian faith.

Her son, Christopher, is gay, has frequently contributed to The Advocate, and is the author of five best-selling novels.

What God says about homosexual perversion is very clear. Start with Genesis 19 and the destruction of Sodom, Gomorrah, and nearby plains cities; then go to Romans 1, followed by I Cor 6:9, which states that “Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders 10nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.” Homosexuality is an illicit lust forbidden by God. He said to His people Israel, "Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination" (Leviticus 18:22) Like it or not, homosexuality is a sin.

Rice's statement against Christianity verifies her lack of understanding of the religion. She is denouncing the Christian faith because it doesn't uphold sin, which indicates she is ignorant of the religion she criticizes. Jesus didn't pay the price for our sins so we could continue wallowing in them. A Christian doesn't forsake her religion for that reason or for any other reason. As per I John, if one departs from the Christian faith, he was never a part of it anyway. Rice is pathetic.

Nothing wrong with it at all, if you like living in a one party dictatorship...I still kinda like the two-party system myself...but realize a lot of you righties no longer feel that way!

Grrl, Jesus had nothing to do with the religious right then and He still doesn't. There's millions of gay Christians. Talk to Soulforce, read books like Take Back The Word and What The Bible Really Says About Homosexuality, and visit some Gay Affirming Churches.

Most modern Bible scholars believe the Gospels weren't actually written by Jesus' disciples or anyone living contemporary to him, and instead were written 80-100 years after his death. They also think that Paul was the author of some, if not all, of the texts. So I think Rice is really rejecting Paulism, though we never call it that.

I commend Ms. Rice for standing behind her beliefs. Granted, with her being in the public eye, her statements are scrutinized a bit more than the average person but for some of the comments made about her decision, all I can say is your attacks are not very Christian...or are they?? Why condemn someone for following their path? Are you upset because it is not the same as yours?? Ms. Rice is an individual with her own mind and her own heart. Leave it at that. You all have no problems reading her books about vampires and evil doings but that was ok as long as you believed her to be following your god and your way of being. Hypocrites !

Unlike Ms. Rice, I do not think ALL Christians are as "anti-" as she claims. Also, by getting out of Christianity and retaining a fondness for Jesus, isn't she throwing the baby out with the bathwater? (I don't mean HER baby. She has obviously been a wonderfully nurturing person toward that young man.

There is a HUGE difference between faith and religion....one can still believe and have faith is a particular belief system such as Christianity, yet be totally disgusted with how that belief system is practiced by the flawed humans who claim to share the same beliefs (though you wouldn't know that by their behavior or the words coming out of their mouths)....so she is choosing to be a spiritual person rather than some mindless sheep following a narrow dogma....good for her!
