Sex-Change Capital Loses a Doctor

Dr. Marci Bowers X390 (FAIR) | ADVOCATE.COM

A doctor known for her expertise in helping transgender people is leaving the so-called sex-change capital of the world for the San Francisco Bay area.

Marci Bowers told KMGH News that she was planning on leaving her Trinidad, Colo., practice by October 1 to help more people and to unite with a first-year surgical resident in San Francisco with whom she is in a relationship.

Bowers has performed hundreds of surgeries in Trinidad since 2003. She took up the practice after Stanley Biber retired in 2003, after 34 years and thousands of gender-reassignment surgeries.

"Normal" is merely a statistical term. Being gay is abnormal because the average of Americans is heterosexual. Being left-handed is abnormal because the average is right-handed. Being thin is abnormal because the average weight of Americans is way up there. Being Hispanic is abnormal in USA because we are in the minority. But being white anglo-saxon is abnormal in Mexico, say.

@Jesse and other posters: how many times will I have to hammer in the fact that GENDER and sexual attraction are NOT one and the same thing? Lots of"T's" are also lesbian and gays!! I should know!!! as for the article, well, i could have bet Bangkok was the de facto sex change capital. Then again, Kudos to this woman and her pioneer teacher. I'll tell you what i think "normal "is : someone who accepts and respects others. Sorry you don't belong, Jesse.

Jesse, ask any cis-gender heterosexual right wing conservative religious person if THEY think gays or lesbians or bisexuals are ‘normal’ and you’ll hear a very loud “HELL NO!”. Please grow up and accept that there are some individual people within the GLBT community that you may not like personally but we do need to all hang together… or we’ll damn sure hang separately.

Jesse, normal is a statistical average, not a value judgement. Who wants to be merely average?

Jesse - there is no such thing as "normal". No one is normal, becuase if there were 1 normal person in this world, everyone else would be abnormal because no one is the same as anyone else. I think its too bad that this woman is leaving her practice, she probably changed the lives of many many people and will probably be missed very much.

Jesse. You should be ashamed of yourself for such a comment. I am a transgendered woman, and I am proud of it. I am loved by my parents, who are extremely supportive. I am loved by partner, who supports and encourages me. I am respected by my co-workers and peers, who recognize my creative ability as television editor and a musician. There was a time when I wasn't normal: when I was in the closet, and used a false identity and a desire for conformity hurt a lot of people. I am also fortunate to work with lots of gay men and women, who don't have your stinking attitude. They are my brothers and sisters. You, thank God, are not.

Normality is subjective. To me normal is something that makes someone feel happy, normal, and complete without hurting anyone else.
