Threats, Dead Cat for Pro-Gay Pol.

A Memphis city council member who has expressed her support for a proposed LGBT antidiscrimination policy has been the target of death threats.

Police may increase patrol units around Janis Fullilove's home because she received threatening phone calls and a dead cat was thrown onto her lawn, WREG News reports.

Nonetheless, Fullilove's position is unchanged, says Jonathan Cole of the Tennessee Equality Project.

"No one should be discriminated against based upon their color, their sexual orientation, not at all," Fullilove said at a recent council meeting, according to The Commercial Appeal. "A number of states and businesses here in the Memphis area, including FedEx, put in place mechanisms that would prevent discrimination based on sexual orientation."

How truly sad. Not only is she getting attacked by Christian conservatives, the fact that she is black is enough reason for her to be attacked by most comment-posters on Advocate.com.

Done - email sent. There must be something in the water in the south. That creates the mental illness called homophobia, just as it created the mental illnesses of slavery segregation and the KKK

Here, contrary to what most people think is the case, is an straight, outspoken, African American ally. What she needs now is HUGE support from the LGBT population in Memphis and surrounding areas. Come on people, let's band together and rally behind this woman. This has moved far, far beyond an anti-discrimination issue. Now it's become an intimidation issue. Support those who support us -- and by us, I mean the LGBT population AND its allies. And please, the next time someone says all black people are homophobic or some such nonsense, remember that to agree or to stand by silently and let those comments pass is equivalent to spitting in Ms. Fullilove's face.

This is the worst killed of descrimination; descrimination against supportive ideals. She wants to help people and ends up getting attacked. It's so sad when good people are rewarded with pain.

Being from Memphis, I am very proud of Janis. The media tries to make her out to be the bad guy, but she is very right on this one. I am glad that someone is stand up for the rights of LGBT to work without fear of being discriminated against.
