Gay Character Coming to Vampire Diaries

PAUL WESLEY IAN SOMERHALDER VAMPIRE DIARIES X390
- Vampire Diaries stars Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder.

Vampire Diaries creator Kevin Williamson says he’s not quite sure when and he’s not quite sure who, but soon one of the show’s characters will come out.

The gay writer-director says he doesn’t want a repeat of the coming-out story line on Dawson’s Creek, but it’s important to him to have a gay character on the show.

I always feel like I don't have enough diversity on my show, and that is one of the things I'm very conscientious of,” Williamson said at the CW’s party for the Television Critics Association press tour. “And not just gay characters. Any diversity. In anything, I want everyone represented. I want everybody on the show."

The Vampire Diaries is frequently the CW’s highest-rated show. It will return for a second season September 9.

You know, there wasn't a gay character in the book, and that is right. Didn't read the book, but there usually isn't. But the show is already different from the book in several ways. Like, Elena isn' a freaking blonde, Jeremy is the younger BROTHER, and not a pre-teen or whatever, little sister. I think its good to bring on a gay character, or do the fan girls a favor and make Jeremy and Tyler be together. Either way.

What I don't get is, why Americans think, that violence, death and strong language are clean, but sexual content is not? Where is the difference in a boy kissing a girl vs. a boy kissing a boy? Tell me!

How is anything homosexual not clean. It's love, just like heterosexuals. Kids get to see that.

How about keep the show closer to the books? There isn't a gay character in the book series is there? I may be mistaken. Anyhow, I think they should keep them all straight. It seems like every time I turn around now, they are throwing a homosexual in the mix. No, I'm not homophobic, racist or anything like that, I would just like to see some good clean tv. Maybe a show that has some morals...you harldy find those anymore.

How interesting that an openly gay writer/director would create a show with numerous characters and none of them (at least at this point) would be openly gay. Talk about internalized homophobia. I can't imagine a straight writer/director doing a tv show with all gay characters. No wonder the rate of teen suicide is so high.

Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) has already played a gay teen before on Everwood, so if they go with a current character, I'm betting it will be him. He was very convincing.

Hehe. I know, merely wishful thinking. You're right, it would be better if it was a new character :)

I always thought Jeremy and Tyler could end up being a couple. But I think it's going to be a new character also.

I agree with Joseph about it being an all new character. I see that as the only way it would work, seeing as Williamson is saying he doesn't want a 'repeat of DC'. We can rule out Stefan, cause he is too into Elena. Rule out Damon, cuz he's Damon. As for Alaric, he was married. As for Jeremy, he is quite complexed, but still had a serious attraction for two 'ladies' last season. But if written well, I see him as probably the only person on the show now who it could work for, given his age and complexity of character. I am not recalling Matt or Tyler well. I think I know who they are. If they are who I think they are, one can be ruled out, the other is a possibility. But I still say the best route is a fresh face, fresh story.
