UCLA, Princeton Top Gay-Friendly Colleges List

CAMPUS COLLEGE STUDENTS X390 (THINK) | ADVOCATE.COM

Farmington's University of Maine campus, Ithaca College, and the University of California, Los Angeles, are three of the most gay-friendly post-secondary institutions in the United States.

The list, spearheaded by Campus Pride, an advocacy organization for LGBT college students, is topped by 19 universities and colleges with a five-star ranking, the highest since the first list was organized in 2007.

The schools with the top rankings are Carleton College; Humboldt State University; Ithaca College; Oberlin College; Oregon State University; Princeton University; San Diego State University; Syracuse University; Ohio State University; Pennsylvania State University; University of California, Berkeley; University of California, Los Angeles; University of California, Riverside; University of Maine, Farmington; University of Oregon; University of Pennsylvania; University of Southern California; University of Vermont; and Washington University in St. Louis.

“Although not all schools earn a five-star ranking, their voluntary presence and participation in the index shows they are committed to ‘coming out’ for their students and creating truly equal and impactful communities of higher learning,” said Shane Windmeyer, Campus Pride executive director.

The full list is available at CampusClimateIndex.org.

As an FYI, any college or university can and are heavily encouraged to participate in the Campus Pride LGBT-Friendly Campus Climate Index. All colleges have received invitations through their LGBTQA student group/club, Dean of Students, Student Activities, RSOs, etc. Last year in 2009, the Index made over 5000 referrals from LGBTQA high school students to specific colleges on the Index. Of course, the Index is free and easy to complete as a campus. The fact that Smith College, other NY, CA colleges have not taken the time to complete the Index should be noted as they are missing a prime opportunity to recruit new LGBTQA students. Many of these campuses including Smith College have also not participated in the Campus Pride LGBT-friendly College Fair Program while over 120+ have each year. A LGBT-friendly campus environment is about institutional commitment (policies, programs and practices in place) - not just out LGBT students, faculty and staff or the city you happen to live.

I agree with Tony; I can't imagine a more gay-friendly school that NYU. As a student there, I know that if you're a homophobe or at all conservative, ESPECIALLY if you attend Tisch, you're pushed to the bottom and thought of as scum. If you can't be out at NYU, you can't be out anywhere.

This is silly. You're telling me I'm going to find less resistance to my homosexuality and be able to explore homosexual culture more fully at Ohio State University and San Diego State University than NYU and New School? What about New York?! I can promise any social conservatives here are pushed to the bottom of the social pack. Don't know if I could say that about some of these other schools...

Notice none of the schools are south of the Mason-Dixon line. Not a shock.

Keep in mind that this index assesses only the schools that seek out analysis from Campus Climate Index, so the results might not accurately represent the industry. For example, I was surprised not to see Smith College on the list of most friendly schools until I realized that Smith hasn't submitted their credentials for review.

So proud to be a Penn Stater! The LGBT community here is great. Most other students I've come into contact with are pretty open-minded as well.

The thing I find interesting is that Syracuse is one of the best. Southern Methodist is one of the worst. I think they are both Methodist universities. Some one should start putting some presser on SMU, either the church or maybe the Advocate.
