Judge Rules Against Antigay Grad Student

JENNIFER KEETON X390 (ALLIANCE DEFENSE FUND) | ADVOCATE.COM

A federal judge has ruled against graduate student Jennifer Keeton, who refused to read material about counseling gays and increase her exposure to that population because it goes against her beliefs.

U.S. district judge Randal Hall ruled that Augusta State University's requirement was “academically legitimate.” His ruling allows the school to expel Keeton if she doesn’t follow a remediation plan.

Hall said the case “isn’t about pitting Christianity against homosexuality,” but rather the constitutionality of the school's requirement.

It seems that a counselor's primary desire is to help someone out of distress. It is not the school's role to mandate what a counselor should think (prior to having patients) to accomplish that. How sound is her thinking? How compasionately can she apply the psychological principles? That's decided by a State Board. Then her patients decide if she's flipped out by keeping her or dumping her. Why bash her for standing up for good principles? Why condemn her on the basis of her faith? Perhaps the bashers are pulling down Christianity as the Christians do gays? The Christians aren't actually doing it just to "bash". They read the 'book' and the gays don't out so well. Christians are just trying to reach out and tell them the outcome, even if they don't always do that well. (They're not perfect, same as you) Well, that's my view on the thing. Is it my turn for being bashed, now, too?

Every state board should exercise a high degree of scrutiny in determining the fitness of candidates for licensure as psychologists, social workers, counsellors or psychotherapists who evince attachment to an agenda, as evidenced (in part) by graduation from a religiously-affiliated institution. Here in Kentucky, there are at least a half-dozen undergraduate and graduate programs offering BSW and MSW degrees thta have hteir origin in "Christian" church affiliated colleges and universities. The damage that can be done by a "committed, Bible-believing Christian" in such a position is immeasurable. In other words, a religious extremist with a degree or a license is still a religious extremist. You can't put lipstick on a pig and call it "Mary."

She chose to attend the school, willingly chose the curriculum as it was advertised, did not complete or excel in the program, and now blames her failure on the faculty and administration! She should get used to flipping burgers in her small hometown b/c that will be all she is qualified to do for life.

I am glad to hear the court's ruling was logical. My fear is that this woman will actually graduate and put innocent people at risk. As a former counselor myself I am too aware of what someone in her position with an agenda can do. The state board should look at her very carefully prior to licensure. Oh and she's and ignorant bitch :)

If she had on any more eye makeup, she'd have to own stock in Maybelline. Raccon eyes, anyone? People like Jennifer make me sound catty and sorry to be human.

I was under the impression that counselors were there to listen and listen objectively, not to try and save our immortals souls from hell and damnation. At $120 per hour I don't want to have someone trying to 'save' me. If I wanted that I would go to my local clergyman.

The radical Christians will distort this story into something it's not, selectively ignoring parts, twisting facts, until it fits into their big lie about a "homosexual agenda." We'll probably see this described somewhere as a further assault on Christians' rights by homosexual activists, part of the war on Christianity itself. That much can be expected. But the scary part is that the real lunatics, on the fringe of the Christian right, may see it as yet another sign of the coming Armagedeon (as foretold in revelations), or some such nonsense, or perhaps as further proof that the anti-Christ is almost here, if he's not already here (a small percentage of them already believe that Obama is the anti-Christ - no kidding!). Thank God, most Christians aren't so crazy as to ever believe such insanity from the fringe. Because if they were, I don't think we would ever be able to get along with these freaking psychos. They're getting ready for "holy war" now, and I don't see it getting better.

I am counselor in Tennessee. I recieved my masters degree from a private Christian college. The bottom line for any counselor is to be well versed in all types of cultural issues and beliefs. However, it is stressed that a counselor should NEVER impose their personal views on their clients. It is also ethically inappropriate to counsel anyone whose beliefs you cannot honor. For example, I could not counsel a women who is coming to me to better a wife by following a religious belief that she be subservant to her husband. I am bound by ethics to refer her to another counselor. This student being required to be more versed in gay relationships is not forcing her to enter into a counseling relationship with gay people or couples. Given her beliefs, it would be unethical for her to do so. The school is simply offering a well rounded curriculum for the age we live. How she chooses to practice is up to her.
