Bogotá Warms to Gay Marriage

BOGOTA PRIDE X390 | ADVOCATE.COM

A recent government-backed survey shows that 63% of residents in the Colombian capital of Bogotá support marriage equality.

The survey, which was conducted via telephone, reached a pool of 1,200 citizens, Colombian paper El Tiempo reports. Of those surveyed, 53.8% were women, 46.2% were men, all between the ages of 18 and 59. Eighty-nine percent were heterosexual.

The poll was part of a larger, eight-month project examining attitudes toward LGBT citizens in the city. As was expected, the capital city was more accepting than other regions of Colombia.

"In the lower strata more work needs to be done. Where there is a higher level of education, there is greater acceptance of the issue," explained Carolina Giraldo, director of sexual diversity for district planning.

The Colombian survey is a facet of the larger marriage equality debate that is seemingly sweeping South America. It follows the recent legalization of same-sex marriage in Argentina and occurs amid debates over the topic in Chile.

Making these surveys through the phone is brilliant! People are more likely to express their true feelings if they feel that others are not watching and judging them. Gay marriage (and gay rights as a whole) needs to be recognized. Its an important step in allowing gay culture to come out from the underground. As a gay man, I support gay marriage in Colombia and all over the world.

@Ginelle.. Dear sister; you hit the nail RIGHT ON THE HEAD!!!! If Colombia gets on board with marriage equality, Chile will probably follow suit. THEN we'll see the domino affect as one South American country after another goes for marriage equality. I loved your comment about the Bishop of Rome.. Sadly, I doubt this will wake him up. His church seems intent on keeping its collective head buried in the sand.

That's a great news. I have a boyfriend in Bogota. I would love to marry him in his home country since we don't have same-sex marriage or any other marriage recognition laws in the Philippines...=)

Wouldn't it be lovely if all of South America just became one big old mecca of Gay Marriage! What a slap in the side of the head that would be for the Bishop of Rome!

Actually we might be under represented in the survey - keep in mind cities tend to be safer for members of our community and typically the larger the city the better.

Al, we are said to be 10% of the population, although it does seem a bit interesting that they found just that many of us at random! But good for them progress is good everywhere

11% of the respondents were not straight? Does that match Bogota's actual demographics? This is great news and all, but it seems like non-straights might have been overrepresented in the survey.

Well...The new Colombian president Juan Manuel Santos has not warmed up to the idea of gays marrying just yet... But I as a colombian man can dream with marriage equality here! =)
