Johnny Weir Takes on Sexuality

JOHNNY WEIR 201007 X390 (GETTY) | ADVOCATE.COM

In an in-depth interview with New York magazine, Olympic ice skater Johnny Weir explains what he calls his “very specific philosophy about gay, straight, married, sex, partnership.”

Weir's antics have left fans and spectators puzzled. One minute posing in Louboutin heels, the next signing his name as Johnny Gaga Weir, the skater has generated a great deal of press and controversy. Yet Weir, 26, says he will not talk about his sexual orientation.

In the interview he explains at length, “I’m completely self-sufficient. I don’t need anyone for anything. I can have sex with myself, I can love myself, I can do all those things myself. The importance that people place on me not having another half even if it’s just for sex, it’s irrelevant to me. It’s very old-school. When you put people in boxes, you take away a lot of who that person is. How many gay men do we know who are completely straight-acting, who don’t even seem gay but they get classified in the same box as somebody who’s a drag queen? It’s void. It’s not real. I filled out my census form and I wrote down that I was a Pacific Islander because yes, I’m white, but why is that important? Why is anything important? You don’t need to have labels. I would marry a woman. I very well could. People laugh at me, but why is that so funny? I love women. My whole stance is that I just want people to react to who I am, I don’t want people to react to what I am.”

Weir may also have financial motives for keeping mum: The Olympic celebrity has a tell-all autobiography in the works.

I love Johnny Weir so much. I really do, he's perfect skater and very kind as a person. But oh gosh, it's seems sooo bored to me, I'm tired of his "enigmatic talks about his sexuality". To be sensible of the fact that everybody know who he is. Johnny, can't wait for your book because it must be the end of this stupid endless conversations about that evident things.

@ Mark -- Johnny is not "in the closet". Have you seen this kid? He is the exact opposite of "straight acting". Also, when you say he needs to "stop lying", well, since he's never denied being gay, there's no "lying" involved. Also, it greatly amuses me that there's always one or two "I'm sick of this guy! I don't get his appeal" type comments in response to every Johnny article. Here's a little advice. If you're sick of him, stop reading articles about him. Problem solved. If you don't get his appeal, that's cool, but plenty of other people do, so wishing for him to "just go away" because YOU don't like him is a little self-centered. Maybe you should ignore him and let the rest of us who DO get his appeal enjoy the ride.

"straight-acting" should be "masculine". Also, being celebate or non celebate has nothing to do with one's inborn sexual orientation. Finally, embrace who you were born to be, come out of the closet, stop lying, rejoice in the fact that you were born gay, and send a strong signal to suicidal gay teens that being gay is fine.

Daniel how is it even his fault when all he gets is requests for interviews for him to talk about the same subject over and over. That's all people obssess about over him and he has a right to not say or reveal anything if he doesn't want to. It's his life and his business and clearly he's constantly asked the same things from annoying journalists and reporters who can't put the subject to rest. He can hardy be faulted for that.

Amen, David. Hey Johnny it is time to hand the "talking stick" to someone else around the campfire. It was clever when John Cage said "I have nothing to say, and I'm saying it now." but with you it's just blah, blah blah...

I think having a group of people that you can feel fellowship with is important. I don't fit well into a specific sexuality but I have no problem telling people that I am queer. Actually, I am really flaming queer (yes, even more than Johnny). All that don't need labels and boxes stuff is rather inflexible in its own way; I hope you find someone you like Johnny because that is all that really matters.
