Robbie Williams and Gary Barlow, featured members of the '90s British band Take That, patched up their friendship with a new song, "Shame," the video for which draws striking inspiration from gay classic Brokeback Mountain. The video, featuring smoldering glances across the bar, long intimate bar-side discussion, and shirtless afternoon fishing trips, recalls the now-iconic romance between Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist.
According to London's Daily Mail, Williams's departure from hit Brit-pop boy band Take That 15 years ago created what some have called a bitter divide between him and former band mates. Now, as Take That approaches its 20h anniversary, the singers seem to have reconciled with the new single. The song's lyrics seem to directly address the past rift, with lines such as "I don't recall the reasons why. I must have meant them at the time. Is this the sound of sweet surrender? I wrote a letter in my mind but the words were so unkind about a man I can't remember."
On filming the video, Williams commented, "It was amazing, not awkward at all. I love Gary to bits. Ayda [Williams's wife] calls him my boyfriend."
"Shame" is the first single from Williams's upcoming new album, In and Out of Consciousness, set for release October 4.
