The Talking Heads on Mehlman

KEN MEHLMAN 2 X390 (GETTY) | ADVOCATE.COM

As word spread that former Republican National Committee chairman and George W. Bush aide Ken Mehlman had decided to stop living in the closet, pundits, activists, journalists, and even "Jesus Christ" sounded off on Twitter, their blogs, or network news. The following is a roundup of reactions illustrating the complex coming-out of Ken Mehlman.

BlogActive Writer Mike Rogers

"You see, while you and I had the horrible feelings of being treated so poorly by our president, while teens were receiving the messaging 'gay is bad,' giving them 'permission' to gay bash, while our rights were being stripped away state by state, Ken was out there laughing all the way to the bank. So, if Ken is really sorry, and he very well may be, then all he needs to do is sell his condo and donate the funds to the causes he worked against so hard for all those years. He's done a lot of damage to a lot of organizations, while making a lot of money. A LOT of money. It's time to put his money where his mouth is. Ken Mehlman is sitting in a $3,770,000.00 (that's $3.77 million) condo in Chelsea while we have lost our right to marry in almost 40 states."

    Comment:

Melhman was a selfish, greedy, power-hungry coward with no personal integrity and he owes a huge debt to not only all the lgbt people and their families that he hurt, but also to the entire nation promoting these hateful campaigns to draw conservative voters to the polls to elect his boss. It's unconscionable (he had no conscience), and disgusting. Is it forgivable? Maybe the most forgiving Christian would do so, but it's certainly not something that should ever be forgotten. He ushered them into the gas chambers. Should he be held responsible for their deaths? Hell yes.

Would someone at the Advocate please call up CNN and ask if Jon King knew Ken Melhman was gay back during the 2004 election. He said he considers him a friend and I've read several places (and seen in on CNN's Larry King myself) where people said Mehlman's homosexuality was an open secret in Washington. And, if Jon King knew Mehlman was gay why didn't he and CNN report on it back in 2004. I don't think CNN would have let a black politician run a campaign to dismantle affirmative action or the Civil Rights act and not note that he was black. So, why did CNN/Jon King not cover it when it came to Melhman, Rove and Bush villfying gay people?

You are right-on regarding the insane dribble that gay marriage is an attack on “the institution of marriage.” I like to go with facts. It is a FACT that 50% of marriages end up in divorce. Of course, these are heterosexual marriages since that’s the only kind available! Here’s another FACT regarding the other insanity that gay marriage will hurt the raising of children. Let’s look at the facts here. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Health Statistics for 2007 (the latest year of recorded data) 40% of children in the U.S. are born to single women, this is a blended number. The breakdown is: 28% to white women; 51% of Latinas; and 72% to Black women. It’s very clear where the danger is coming from, and it’s decidedly not from gays and lesbians. If they REALLY want to do something about marriage them make it nearly impossible to get divorced and have kids outside of marriage. Isn’t the incredibly obvious? Whether or not gay marriage is available, it will not address these tremendous attacks (caused only by heterosexuals) on traditional marriage. Folks, “the call is coming from inside the house.”

    Comment:

For those who say they want to protect traditional marriage, then they must campaign to outlaw divorce. Divorce destroys more marriages, families, and children than gay marriage would ever impact. Otherwise, come out publicly and admit the truth - you are simply hypocritical, small minded and bigoted.

There is no doubt that this guy (with the Bush Administration's anti-gay tactics) distroyed many lives and hurt countless others by demonizing our community. We should also remember that former Preident Clinton is the one who gave The Bush the Bat to beat us up - with his signing of the DOMA. And yet we embrace the Clintons as proequality. Clinto also singed in DADT.... The fact that people do stupid things when in the closet is nothing new.... not everyone is comfortable with their sexuality at birth - just as many have stood by and watched watched people go hungry, old people be victumized or even children bullied. The fact is this guy could of done more to stand up against what Karl and Bush put forth as the political agenda is no lie. He now apears to be trying right a wrong and assist our community to get equality. As Equality gains popularity in America many of our foes may become our allies - we should be prepared to embrace the assistance.
