Mormons Sued for Proxy Baptism Injury

LAWX390.jpg

A man who claims he injured his back while performing baptisms for the dead is suing the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

According to the The Salt Lake Tribune, Daniel Dastrup of Las Vegas wants to cover medical expenses stemming from a 2007 injury received in North Carolina.

“In a civil suit filed in 3rd District Court on Wednesday, Daniel Dastrup claims he suffered a severe herniated disk in his lumbar spine after performing about 200 baptisms on Aug. 25, 2007,” reports the Tribune. The then 25-year-old claims some of the young men and women he completely immersed in water in the name of the dead weighed as much as 250 pounds.”

Dastrup claims that an officiator denied his request to be relieved.

I really cannot understand why this is posted on LGBT news. Are you now going to post anything that has to do with Target, no matter what the issue is? This has nothing to do with the LGBT community and it seems as if the editor of this website just wanted to show negative things happening to the church - no matter what it is. As an LGBT LDS member I am noticing more and more hateful and ignorant statements by the LGBT community and I am having a hard time discerning what the difference between the two groups are.

Romney, who is a Mormon, is supposedly the 2012 GOP frontrunner. There is a lot a discussion regarding the negatives of his being a Mormon. Is he going to come across as a nut b/c of being a Mormon?

I think JohnJ's comment makes good sense. The Mormon church was the main proponent of Proposition 8 in California, contributing some 70% of the funding. According to some sources, this was the culmination of a lengthy, clandestine battle against marriage equality. We need to be informed about the church, and any current events involving it are potentially relevant to LGBT people and allies. It's true that Mormons are subject to prejudice, but the article above simply states facts with no hostility or even innuendo. Btw here is my understanding of baptizing the dead. Many people are thought to die and go to a temporary Spirit Prison. To later get to one of the three levels of heaven, they have to be baptized, among other things. But they no longer have bodies, so living people have to be baptized in their place. On the other hand, obedient Mormons go to Spirit Paradise and then on to the highest level of Heaven.

The Mormons are one of the largest united conservative voting blocks in the United States. They must be feeling threatened by the movement toward marriage equality. It is an excellent idea to know as much information on their church as possible. As a group with money, they are not going away. I would suspect they will be the movers of anti-equality measures in the future.

@Mike, I was just referring to the fact that whenever something happens that might cast a negative light on Mormons it's posted here or on other sites as 'gay news'. Why? This particular story has absolutely nothing to do with us. It is because its about Mormons and they seem to be painted as our number one enemy. Never mind that other religious groups, including Catholics, Protestants, Muslims and Jews, also contributed funds in support of Prop 8. No, if we went after them then we'd be viewed as hateful and bigoted like all the others who went after them. So instead we focus on the one church who is the most misunderstood of the lot. @Joseph: That may be true. I'm just a little unsure of people and lawsuits. These days, frivolous lawsuits are a dime a dozen and people of all walks of life try to cash in on a situation that may have been of their own doing. Basically, I don't believe this guy when he says he was denied to be relieved.

@Justin: Perhaps it's merely showing a counterpoint to the decision against Rev Spahr. She was punished by her church for performing a legally-sanctioned civil marriage (which the church says is against their dogma). And now, we see a case where someone was injured while acting out church dogma while that church (seemingly) offered him no support in the performance of the dogma.
