MP's Wife Reacts to Coming Out

Victoria Blunt, the wife of Crispin Blunt, the conservative British prisons minister who came out last week, is reported to be “completely traumatized” by his revelation.

According to the Daily Mail, Mrs. Blunt feels betrayed for having sacrificed her own banking career to support her husband, and for having contributed her family fortune to his political campaigns. The couple have separated after nearly 20 years of marriage.

“'She is completely traumatized,' said a source,” the Daily Mail reported. “'She has devoted most of her married life to playing the politician's wife and it was all built on a lie.'”

Mr. Blunt, 50, concealed his homosexuality to such an extent that he once declared being gay was not equal to being straight in a parliamentary debate. He is the uncle of actress Emily Blunt.

Did the article say that they had a loveless marriage? Was it nonstop disappointment for 20 years? They both got something out of being together, they both got some sort of needs met - these people are not dummies. Then the game plan changed - but until then, something was working, even if it didn't met your requirements for how marriages are supposed to work. Just because he likes guys doesn't mean he didn't have feelings for his wife; so lighten up on demonizing either of them.

I have to ask, if this situation were reversed would folks here be quite so sympathetic? What I mean to say is, if a man left his male partner of 20 years because he suddenly decided he was "straight" and wanted to be with a woman would that be seen as forgivable? Yes, the wife voluntarily set aside her career to become a political wife. But she did so based on certain beliefs about her husband that were false. So naturally she's angry and hurt. It's not as if this guy is even the first Tory to come out. How many years of sitting with Alan Duncan and Nick Herbert on the front bench did he lie to himself and his wife? Every one of those years was a year she lost.

Yikes. I can't believe some of the attacks here on the wife? This guy is Ken Mehlman on steroids. It's one thing not to come out. There are a million reasons, good ones, to stay in the closet, say, if you're a movie star, NFL player, politician, etc. In those fields you would never be allowed to succeed if you were out. But to marry someone and use up 20 years of their life? Watch out. Karma is a bitch.

Maybe when he was younger, he didn't like the idea of being gay and really wanted to be a breeder and raise a family...maybe he had a goal of having a family that was 100 times the screwed up family life he had as a kid. Then as ya grow up and get older, you see that being gay sounds kinda fun! As they say... Just sayin...

Sounds to me like the wife is setting herself up for a fault divorce. She voluntarily gave up her banking career to support her husband's political career, no one twisted her arm. Lots of marriages end after 20 years, lots sooner than that. The fact that hers ended because her husband came out of the closet seems irrelevant. Obviously, he didn't acknowledge his sexual orientation himself, or he strategically planned to live a lie (McGreevey, anyone) so he could move up the political ladder. Regardless, it's a personal matter and I don't believe should have any bearing on the amount of alimony she gets. That's the way the cookie crumbles, darling. You played the marriage game and it worked for 20 years. Be grateful for what you have instead of crying over what you don't.

I feel sorry for both parties. Both tried to live the life they thought was right, but age and wisdom bring things to light. Both will move on with their lives (plus he's hot!)

It's a shame that both of these people have lived for twenty years together and that one has finally discovered his true nature. There are heterosexual people who have lived together longer then that, and the woman lots older when the husband decides to exchange her for a younger woman. It happens more and more in our society. People hurt each other every day, it isn't just a same sex problem.

NO WAY! in a society where some men are pressured to live hetero lives... I SAY BUYER BEWARE! Hey lady..this is the risk you are taking in todays climate! This guy (like so many others) probably said to himself over the years .. "Im not gay, Im not gay, Im not gay." Straight people get married? It comes with the risk....
