Power Rangers Producer Slams Yost

DAVID YOST POWER RANGER X390 (GRAB FAIR) | ADVOCATE.COM

One of the top producers for the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers claims Blue Ranger David Yost didn’t quit over homophobia on the set. He says Yost quit because he wanted more money and that the Blue Ranger was always a “pain in the ass.”

Yost came out last week in an emotional interview in which he said he was subjected to years of taunting and antigay slurs while working on the TV series. He said he tried prayer and reparative therapy before finally coming out years later.

But producer Scott Page-Pagter tells TMZ that Yost quit for financial reasons:

"[Yost] and two of the other actors were all getting a bonus on top of their salary. When the other two left the show, production wanted to stop giving him the bonus, and that’s ultimately what led to his departure from the show.”

On the allegations of homophobia, the producer said, “I don’t know why he’s saying this, but he was the only one no one got along with ... he was a pain in the ass.”

Very well put, there usually is two sides to the story and both come out looking as victims. I've been the jerk as well in the past suppressing my identity. That he tried to change his identity would further lead me to believe how deep-seated his discomfort was. That a producer lies, also highly probable.

Whit: Why is it always the intellectual, whiney Blue Ranger who turns out to be gay and never the hunky, friendly Red Ranger? It's so unfair. Did you SEE Billy in the later years of MMPR? He bulked up and (I think) lost the glasses. He was definitely hot. Or maybe I'm biased. I was always the blue ranger when we played it at recess. =p

Haha, I like how the producer doesn't deny the homophobic comments; he sort of tries to justify them: "but he was a pain in the ass, so it was ok."

I'm probably being 'nit-picky", but at the time this all happened, the series was into its second incarnation "Power Rangers ZEO". The colors used at the time, as I recall were, red, green, blue, yellow and pink. However, David Yost DID NOT PLAY the Blue Ranger or ANY Ranger in this series. He was "just" a supporting character. If memory serves Steve Cardenas (sp?) was the Blue Ranger. Sounds to me like they had ALREADY started to diminsh him when all this happened. I'm more inclined to believe Mr. Yost in a situation such as this.

Right this time the Blue Ranger still using "Pain in the ass", how about their homophobia few year or ten year ago?

Funny how Yost, who does seem whiny and bitchy, gets paraded by the backbenchers on here, YET with Mehlman who comes out DOES NOT or HAS EVER engaged in destructive therapy like this fool, and unlike Yost, Mehlman comes out denounces the GOP for their anti-gay marriage stance and is fund raising money for the legalization of gay marriage, and he gets the boot from the fringe self loathing homophobic left. Mehlman decides to do something about it and change course, Yost just sits there and cries like a little girl. LOL

Mr. Yost really needs to stock-up on Rogain, or maybe invest in a hairpiece to cover up that bald spot.

I could honestly see where both parties in this story may be telling the truth. If you're going to quit a WIDLY popular children's show at the height of its popularity, then there is probably more than one factor in your decision to leave. The producers could have very well been homophobic (sadly I am just young enough to remember this tv show, it was extremely popular in the early 90's, a homophobic TV producer is not out of the question) The blue Power Ranger may have been a jerk. Many people trying to supress or change their natural orientation often act out and vent thier frustration in extremely inapropriate ways. Finally, given corporate America's natural tendency toward greed, I can see the blue power ranger being denied his bonuses.. It's all plausible to me..
