Texas Gov. Takes Gay Marriage Jab

RICK PERRY X390 (GETTY) | ADVOCATE.COM

Texas Republican governor Rick Perry, currently seeking a third term in office, took a swipe at same-sex marriage while on the campaign trail.

At Clem Mikeska's Bar-B-Q in Temple, Perry said he had no intention of running for higher office. He then added, "There is still a land of opportunity, friends — it's called Texas. We're creating more jobs than any other state in the nation. ... Would you rather live in a state like this, or in a state where a man can marry a man?"

This guy is an embarrassment to the state. His opponent, former mayor of a city with a huge gay population -- Houston -- is pushing a term limit proposal to keep the Perry's of this world from running for more than two terms. Perry, don't forget, lashed out at Obama stimulus package before the put the money into the general fund. Repubs have no shame. He also threatened to secede from the Union, an idea no one in his right mind in Texas would support. We call him Governor Hair due to his obsession with coiffure. He just may find himself out of a job come January, but I am not holding my breath. Two factors weigh in favor of his keeping it: the gerrymandering of Tom DeLay and others, and the fact that Hispanics, who are mostly Dem, tend not to vote. Shame, shame!

Why, yes, Mr. Perry, I'd rather live in a state where a man can marry a man. Glad you asked.

This would seem to be just a sloppy, off the cuff kind of statement but I doubt it is. Perry more likely has been watiing to use this line to create more of that hyper-masculine swagger he likes to project.

@GD actually idiot, more people each year get married at the JOP than at a church. My marriage has nothing to do with my church, however my church leaders say that I am what God made me. Marriage has not been a "church thing" for many many many years. You dont have to be ordained to marry someone, just certified by a gov. entity. I am ok with God, so dont worry about me, worry about yourself.

@Thad in SF: I've been saying the same thing for years. We should change the whole set-up. Civil unions for everyone, gay or straight. Then, if you want to continue into marriage, go to your local religious leader. All those straight folks who are married by a Justice of the Peace or the captain of a ship or whatever...they should have a civil union ONLY.
