Fly to Sweden, Get Married en Route

ICE HOTEL X390 (FAIR) | ADVOCATE.COM

Visit Sweden and SAS Scandinavian Airlines are teaming up in an effort to host the first in-flight same-sex wedding.

The contest is open to one U.S. and one European couple. The U.S. winners will get married en route from New York to Sweden this December, honeymooning at the world-renowned Ice Hotel and for three additional days in Stockholm.

The European couple will honeymoon in New York and Los Angeles.

The two companies have launched an online social networking site where couples can upload a video or photos and create profiles urging people to vote for them.

“Airlines, including SAS, have organized weddings onboard flights for decades, but we are proud to be the first in the world to organize same-sex weddings in the air,” Robin Kamark, chief commercial officer for SAS, said in a statement.

@John M Yes, the Netherlands was the first country to legalise same-sex marriage. Denmark, however, was the first country in the world to legalise civil partnership but they've never upgraded to full marriage equality.

I like the promotion. It's too bad neither New York or Los Angeles fully recognize the marriages. Still, Sweden sounds wonderful, sign me up. Just one problem though, the groom. Out of luck there. But, I like the campaign.

The Scandinavian countries are so beautiful geographically and socially--and, along with New Zealand, considered to have the highest health standards in the world. Of my multi-national background, it is the Norwegian heritage that I prize the most. It breaks my heart to realize that the U.S. is so backward in social justice in comparison.

@ Falconer: Beg your pardon, but Denmark was the FIRST country in the world to legalize same sex marriage in 1989. Check Wikipedia.

Slightly incorrect article, Norway and Sweden have marriage equality but Denmark does not. They still have registered partnership.

I may be wrong but... I always thought that since the plane originated in NY that NY law was applied until the plane touched down in the destination country. At least thats what I remember reading years ago. It would suck to think that you are married and not be because of some legal screwup on the airlines part.
