Republicans Donate for Marriage Equality

KEN MEHLMAN 4 X390 (GETTY) | ADVOCATE.COM

Ken Mehlman isn't the only Republican raising funds for the American Foundation for Equal Rights.

According to an invitation for the fund-raising event he's cohosting, other notable Republicans attending to support legal efforts to overturn Proposition 8 and legalize marriage equality include campaign strategist Steve Schmidt, attorney Ben Ginsberg, and former New Jersey governor Christie Todd Whitman.

As Ben Smith at Politico points out, the event is at the home of Paul Singer, the hedge fund manager who has been a strong Wall Street presence in Republican politics.

Oh this is sweet sweet glory. It's high time the socially open minded voices in the republican party (and yes, they are in there) come out and cease their long silence. I am glad to see the religious right loosing their stranglehold on all things conservative. If things like this keep happening some elected officials will take note. The first republican that wins on a pro same sex marriage platform will be the real wakeup call. A re-birth of actual libertarianism in the Republican party would be a special kind of joy. I do seem to recall something about the government staying out of our lives and bedrooms. Seems like that's exactly what we're asking for.

As Roger stated, not ONE Repug running for office is supportive of gay Americans. In fact, they use hatred towards gay Americans in order to gain votes. Is Obama and the Democrats a disappointment? Yes. Hugely disappointing. Is hate speech occurring under the Democrats as it CONTINUES to be used by the Repug party? How fabulous that current Repugs who are not elected and have no power support gays NOW. It means nothing. Any gay American voting for the GOP needs their head examined. To equate both parties as the same as a frequent previous poster is delusional and ignorant.

@Roger, Stop being blind and open your eyes. You know damn well the DNC has failed in doing anything for the gay community. Let is not forget who signed DADT and DOMA into law. Let us not forget who joined the GOP in passing such laws. There were both passed with huge bi-partisan support. Hence why I believe, among other things, that BOTH parties are one in the same.

What the Advocate won't tell you and what is part of the media narrative is that not one Republican running for office or in office is advocating or raising money for our equality. Not one. But how could that be. It's Democrats and the evil Obama who are out to get us, right? Doesn't it strike anyone as an odd coincidence that right as a media narrative (without any bearing in facts) has developed that all gays are "angry" with Democrats, a bunch of non-office holding Republicans try to grab some attention (and a few more gullible votes) to show, "hey, we care about the gays, too." Really Advocate? Really? No wonder your subscription numbers are in the tank. Here's my prediction; once all of you stay home from not voting this November, you will once again start bitching about Republicans, and drive more traffic to Advocate, they will make more money, and be happy. And we will all have fewer rights than we have now, as the Repubs slash and burn any and all progress we have made.

LK says"but Chris Matthews is doing a segment right now called Republicans Embrace Gay Marriage" Yeah I saw it too, the thing is the GOP need to realize that those "social conservatives" are not in fact "conservatives" they are liberals... a good way to start to deal with the issue of gay marriage is to expose those social conservatives and their hypocrisy: http://gayrea51.blogspot.com/2010/09/judge-napolitano-exposes-hypocrisy-of.html

Let's see how many Republicans in the US Senate vote in favor of repealing DADT in September. Let's also see how many Republicans co-sponsor the Democrats' bill to repeal DOMA. My guess is 0 on both counts. 0 Republicans in the NY Senate voted for same sex civil marriage equality. All but 7 Democrats (who we are working hard to replace) voted in favor. The US Constitution guarantees equal civil constitutional rights (including civil marriage) to ALL.

I'm really tired of hearing conservatives say Cheney and Laura Bush are ahead of Obama on gay marriage....NEITHER of them said a word on the subject for 8 years- when it mattered, and we're supposed to be grateful now when they have nothing to lose? Cheney has a gay daughter- his silence was deafening and cruel! Yes, Obama needs to grow a pair and wake up, but don't praise the others.

To be fair, I see at least two top Democrats, Dick Gephardt and John Podesta, also listed as hosts. This is being billed as a Republican fundraiser, and I'm sure we'd see more Democrats if it were a Democratic fundraiser. But still, these people are mainly Republicans, and they're doing something concrete for marriage equality - which you don't see many Dems doing. Maybe now some Republicans will start voting in our favor. Then, the Dems will have to support our rights so we don't vote Republican.

Some Republicans - very few - have supported our struggle. Many (not all) Democrats have been helpful. Right now, the country is in financial trouble. We nearly had a complete collapse that took a lot of political time and energy. Politically interested gays are probably aware that government is limping along with Republicans refusing to assist in governing. Cable News Channels seem to be in election year mode 24/7 with verbal assaults on just about everything Democrat. Yes we need DADT eliminated. Yes we need to overturn DOMA. We need jobs. Hispanics need immigration reform. We need it all yesterday. I believe we have an obligation to learn the political process so when we complain, our arguments make sense. - I don't think shrill, uninformed, bitchy, angry comments move politicians to our side. I think Obama is a good man and will pass what he can. If we alienate both Democrats and Republicans - we will have no one to move our issues in Congres.

Not only did that big ol' Republican Ted Olsen help spearhead the groundbreaking challenge to Proposition 8 in California, but Chris Matthews is doing a segment right now called Republicans Embrace Gay Marriage. Meanwhile, what have the Democrats done ? The old lip service crap is not cutting it any more. Time to walk the walk, or we walk out the door.
