Boxer, Fiorina Debate Marriage Equality

BARBARA BOXER CARLY FIORINA X390 (GRAB) | ADVOCATE.COM

Sen. Barbara Boxer and her Republican challenger, Carly Fiorina, debated Wednesday, with Fiorina comparing her opposition to marriage equality to the position held by President Barack Obama.

In the video from Think Progress the candidates were asked whether they thought federal law should be changed to allow for equal rights for same-sex couples.

Fiorina, a former Hewlett Packard CEO, defended Proposition 8 as the expression of voters’ will and said she supported civil unions.

“The Defense of Marriage Act had broad bipartisan support and the position that I have consistently espoused is consistent with that of our president and the vast majority of senators in the U.S. Senate," she said.

Senator Boxer disagreed, saying that it was a very “straightforward decision” to acknowledge that only marriage equality could achieve equal rights for same-sex couples.

The transcript of the marriage exchange:

Moderator: [Ms.] Fiorina, you supported and say that marriage should be only between one man and one woman. Domestic partnerships and civil unions are not recognized by the federal government. And this means that gay and lesbian couples are denied thousands of rights that heterosexual couples get, like benefits from Social Security. Should federal law be be changed to federal equal status? If not, why not?

Fiorina: I believe marriage is between a man and a woman. But I also have been simple and clear: I support civil unions. Also, the position I have consistently espoused is consistent with that of our president and the vast majority of senators in the U.S. Senate. I think what we now are seeing on Proposition 8 is that the voters were quite clear about their views on this. And this is now going through a legal process. Whatever your views about gay marriage, I think many of us would conclude that when voters have such a clear decision, for that decision to be overturned by a single judge, seems perhaps not appropriate. And so this is now the beginning of what will be a long legal process. I support very much the repeal of "don't ask, don't tell." And I know that the military is getting ready to release its report on the best way to execute that decision.

Moderator: Senator Boxer? Your reply?

Boxer: You know, we do have courts that check the legislature. And the legislature checks the president. That's what our Constitution says. So yes, a lot of our laws that pass may go through that test. You read [California supreme court chief justice] Ron George's decision on this — by the way, a Republican who was appointed to the state of California bench — he's clear. He says the only way to get equal rights to gays and lesbians is to say that there should be marriage equality. It's a very straightforward decision. Because, as you said, the only way to get the rights that married couples have, is to go for marriage equality. And I think — and I'm glad to say, I believe people are coming around to see it.

You're not very well informed. There has been no evidence with your fear about forcing the church to do anything. You've been brainwashed by faulty advertisments. I can also say that blacks aren't to marry whites, period! That was true in some states less than 50 years ago. Just because the majority votes for it doesn't mean it's the right thing to do. Think about it.

Marriage is between a man and a woman, period. The idea that legal right can't be solved by a civil union and must be solved by guilt ridden gays muscling in on a heterosexual institution is a red herring. Shame on guilt ridden gays. After the state redefines "marriage" to same sex, then what?? Two things: 1) Guilt ridden gays will use the state laws against church to try to force the change of marriage definitions in religion, and 2) every "partnership" will file suit, including polygamists, incestuous, pedophiles, and yes even beastiality wackos, demanding the state change "marriage" to suit their condition and free them of guilt, just like the state did for gays. And they will win! SHAME on guilt ridden gays. Be happy with yourself and quit seeking others affirmation by muscling in on their gig! SHAME I say!!

Carly Fiorina is a right wing hack supported by reactionary religious conservatives. She was fired by the Hewlett Packard Board of Directors for driving that company into the dumps, and cut laid off 30,000 workers when she was CEO of HP, and sent those jobs overseas. Barbara Boxer has and always will be a "fierce advocate" for LGBT people. Go Boxer, go!!!

Fuck off Ms. Fiorina...and shove your civil union up your hoo hoo...

I hear a lot of Prop 8 supporters bemoaning the poor 7,001,084 voters who are not being listened to (I've even heard some Fox viewers say 8 million). They conveniently forget about the 6,401,482 who voted against it. Prop 8 passed by less than 600k votes, or about 4%. Sorry, but 4% does not a clear mandate make! California had a record voter turnout for the 2008 election, but there were still another 20% of registered voters who did not care enough about the issues to even cast a ballot. And yes, I did notice Fiorina claim to have the same position as our "fierce advocate".

As Ms. Fiorina and so many Republicans seems to be unaware of, our United States government is based on "representative democracy", and not on "pure democracy". otherwise the actual votes of the citizens would decide all of our issues and we would have no need for the other branches of our government to provide checks and balances. Needless to say, if that were the case, we would most likely still be stuck in the past...African-Americans would still be slaves, women would be unable to vote or own land, and so many other wonderful social issues that have changed our country for the better would never have happened. I'm certain that Ms. Fiorina didn't object to our "representative democracy" awarding the 2000 Presi.dential election to George W. Bush, eventhough Al Gore receive more votes. As usual for Republicans, it is "pick and choose" to satisfy their bigotry and self-rightousness.

So it seems republicans, in light of evidence denouncing their factually incorrect claim that more americans support denying same-sex marriage, are dropping it. the senators do not count. what they believe doesnt override the constitution.
