New Miss Universe for Marriage Equality

JIMENA NAVARRETE X390 (PUB) | ADVOCATE.COM

The newly crowned Miss Universe from Mexico says she supports marriage equality, distancing herself from beauty queens who have spoken out against equality.

"I believe we have to learn to be respectful because they are people who are the same as us," Jimena Navarette said in an interview with a Mexican radio station. "There is no difference. And I don't believe it's just to discriminate [against] somebody based on the gender they prefer, right?... The truth is that I am absolutely against discrimination, and, well, what can I say, I have many friends who are homosexual and I adore them. And they are equal folk: There is no reason we should want to set them aside; there is no reason why we shouldn't let them enjoy what they want to enjoy with their partner."

Now if we can just convince them to drop their ban on transgirl contestants.

Actually Chelsea, many beauty queens since Carrie Prejean have stated that they are against gay marriage without controversy. Miss Mexico was just stating her personal opinion, just like many others before her. It is foolish of you to believe you would know what she thinks and feels on any issue, much less this one. I, on the other hand, believe she should speak for herself, “The truth is that I am absolutely against discrimination. I have many friends who are gay and I adore them.”

Chelsea: Believe it or not there are beauty queens out there who are for Marriage Equality. Just because she may have a different opinion then you doesn't mean it was forced upon her.

Chelsea, Ms Navarette has the right to voice her opinion when asked just as your little princess Carrie Prejean. As well, we have the right to voice our approval or disapproval in the same manner. To imply, though, that Ms Navarette is only voicing support of same gender marriage as a result of Ms Prejean's situation is nothing more than an attempt to discredit our right to equality via the insinuation that a woman who favored the victimization of others via the elimination of their rights was the victim herself. By very definition, this is neither a valid definition of "victim" nor is it a plausible argument. Ms Prejean made her statement; and so has Ms Navarette. Move on.

What else was she going to say? Regardless if that is her true feelings are not she has a whole year to reign and she wants to do it without any controversy. Heavens forbid she dares say marraige should be between one man and one woman. She would find herself boycotted, call names, forcing sponsers and events to drop anything she is associated with and finding herself being disinvited everywhere.
