Gay Dean Marries Wife, Gets Canned

Christine M. Judd x390 (Cathedral High School) | ADVOCATE.COM

An athletic director at a high school in Springfield, Mass. says she was pressured to leave her position because she married her wife last month.

Christine Judd, dean of students and athletic director for Cathedral High School, stepped down after meeting with school administrators on Wednesday, according to The Republican newspaper.

Judd worked for the school for 12 years, where she rose from science teacher to dean of students and, three years ago, athletic director. While the state has allowed gay people to marry since 2004, same-sex marriage is still not sanctioned by the Catholic Church.

"Cathedral had nothing to do with this," she said in the article. "This was a diocesan decision. In the end, the timing of this issue really affects the kids. That is where it has the most effect."

The school's website describes the former athletic director and dean as "one of the key members of the faculty and staff."

"I'm hurt, but I wish nothing but the best for Cathedral, its students, the parents, the athletic teams, administration and faculty," she said in the article. "I bleed purple [the school’s color]."

America seems to be behind on equality issues again. In the UK it is illegal to sack someone because of their race or sexuality.

She got herself into this. Every person on the earth knows that homosexuality is not tolerated or accepted at any Catholic institution. Like it or not that is their rule and they are not forcing anyone to accept it. I am quite sure this woman knew that when she accepted a job there. I don't believe they came knocking on her door but she went to them looking for a job. So how did she justify working at such an institution all these years knowing their anti gay policy. She is no different than those gay parents who enroll their children in a catholic school and then the child gets expelled because of their lfestyle and then everyone cries intolerance and wants to sue the diocese. If you don't want these things to happen to you then don't patronize these establishments. I don't think this is any kind of brain surgery. And before anyone asks no I am not Catholic.

Of course they fired her. The Catholic church could not see how she could produce children for them to molest so they have no use for her.

The Catholic Church is at war against evidence and information: it cannot face the fact that wholesome productive and successful gay people are now in all walks of life in America. The church wants these people to act like shamed sinners. It will lose the war of course. But it is sad to see Christine Judd lose her job before this church comes to its senses. I commend her for marrying her partner. She stood up for the truth of her relationship.

Not surprising for a legalized extortion racket. I am only shocked when I hear that churches are doing something for the benefit of the community where they prey on that community.

Even though ENDA wouldn't have helped Dean Judd, I look at this as a reminder that ENDA is wayyy overdue.

I clicked through to the source. Dean Judd was spot on when she called hypocrisy, and questioned if there are diocese employees who divorce and remarry, use birth control, are pro-choice, or have had vasectomies if they’re men. I’ll just bet that this diocese is oblivious to all that. Dupont’s hypocrisy really is incredible. Dupont claims that Judd “contravened the doctrine and teaching of the Catholic church.” The real issue is that she contravened the politics and bigotry of the current hierarchy. Back in the 70’s, the Catholic Church opposed Anita Bryant’s so-called Save the Children campaign. What has changed since then? Not so much the doctrine, but the people in power.

Unfortunately, even if ENDA passes, a Catholic high school would most likely be exempt from following it.

@Mark in WF: Well passing ENDA would do absolutely no good in this case. Go and actually READ the text of ENDA. Section 6 is a "religious exemption" which essentially means that people employed by religious organizations or their affiliates (such as a school operated by the Roman Catholic Church) aren't guaranteed protection.
