Engle Rallies Against Gay Marriage in Calif.

LOU ENGLE X390 (GETTY) | ADVOCATE.COM

Pastor Lou Engle's controversial ministry drew thousands of attendees on Saturday to protest gay marriage, abortion, and pornography on the steps of the California state capitol in Sacramento.

Engle's "TheCall to Conscience" included a 12-hour fast, the Associated Press reports. The rally was in part a protest of the recent court ruling striking down Proposition 8 as unconstitutional (the case is currently on appeal).

"If marriage is going to be upheld between a man and a woman, which we believe is the best for families and children and society, then right now, it seems we need divine intervention," Engle said in an interview with the AP. "That's part of the reason we're coming here, to pray, but also to take a stand and be a prophetic voice to stand for truth."

A recent Uganda rally starring Engle was featured in the September cover story for The Advocate.

It's amazing how many religious leaders focus — excessively, tenaciously, with adolescent fervor — to what people are doing with their intimate relationships: they are like the "National Enquirer" of the religious world. It's both telling and worrisome. Some religious leaders are absolutely enthralled with what people are up to in the bedroom with a voyeuristic focus that is truly curious.

@Laura Rhodes in Simpsonville; God BLESS you and your good husband for providing such a loving and non-judgemental environment for your gay son. He is fortunate, indeed, to have parents such as you. Please God that OTHERS, too, realize that He loves ALL His children, regardless of sexual orientation and that we, too, are worthy of every right afforded to all other Americans. May He keep you in His care all the days of your lives. Thank you!

That is the only way you can get your point across, this is how the glbt community of Mexico was able to obtain equal rights. We take to the streets, we demand, we are willing to fight and willing to go head to head with the church. In Guadalajara we took on the Cardinal and his puppet followers, rallied, demanded the encarceration of the Cardinal for interfereing with the separation of church and state, we called for the resignation and encarceration of the Governor for failing to protect everyone's rights and we will be out on the streets as many times as it takes to demand respect and equal rights. We are celebrating 200 years of independence from the church and our motto will always be --LAS JOTAS UNIDAS, JAMAS SERAN VENCIDAS-- that is right Viva Mexico and all the brave men and women who will fight for their rights. Stop crying and hiding behind elected officials to do your job, just do it.

When the Channel 2 news reporter from the Bay Area was live on air at 5 PM yesterday, there was hardly anyone in attendance. They had seven megatron screens across the mall that were completely deserted. It was hoped they'd attract up to 50,000 participants, but instead it's believed they got around 15,000 throughout the day-long event, with almost all having left before 5 PM for dinner. It was definitely a political event, as everything was about marriage equality according to interviewed participants. . .they know that if the state doesn't join in defending Prop H8 by this coming Friday, their risk of lack of standing could derail their efforts to overturn Judge Walker's ruling. It's sad when you use the name of "God" as a political tool against the weakminded.
