Jag Drops Aussie Swimmer for Slur

Australian competitive swimmer Stephanie Rice has been dumped as the face of luxury car brand Jaguar after she called the South African rugby team “f*ggots” on her Twitter account, Australia’s Herald Sun reports.

“We wish Stephanie success for the future,” said Kevin Goult, general manager of Jaguar Australia, when confirming that the company had discontinued its relationship with Rice.

Rice, who tweeted “Suck on that f*ggots” after watching Australia’s Wallabies beat South Africa on Saturday, later apologized for the comment and said she understood why Jaguar made the decision it did. “I did not mean to cause offense and I apologize,” she said Sunday.

Gay Olympic diver Matthew Mitcham took to his Facebook page Monday morning to defend Rice, writing, “I know a lot of ppl are upset by what Steph Rice said. I agree, it was offensive & very thoughtless, but being friends with her for 2yrs, I know she is not homophobic. She meant no malice, & she has apologized for her careless comment posted in the excitement of the moment. That’s enough for me to forgive a friend."

If a word is not in your vocabulary, you cannot "Slip" and say it in hast. If it is in your vocabulary, do not waste your time apologising because you were found out using the word.

Recently, The Association of Surfing Professionals ran two pre-recorded pieces where their athletes used the word "gay" in a derogatory way - broadcast around the world with loads of little aspiring surfers watching. On the first offense, I contacted the International Media Manager for ASP International, Dave Prodan, and to his credit he immediately responded and made the producers bleep the word. Several days later, however, the ASP ran another pre-recorded piece live during the contest where one of their surfers uses the word "gay", negative connotation not factual. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CK3kex9U8r0 Please join me in emailing Dave Prodan until the message is received. These are supposed to be professional athletes competing in a professional sporting event - and they should be held, as with Stephanie Rice, at higher standards if they want their sport to be taken seriously.

It's great to forgive someone when they have admitted they did something stupid. We all need to learn that otherwise we just let the offenses against us pile up and up. My concern however is who does this woman hang out with and what is really in her heart and mind that sees her using "faggot" as the first derogatory word to come out of her mouth? She has to have already had an understanding that the use of this word was rude and offensive, and would have maximum affect in slighting her opponents, otherwise why use it? After all...out of the heart the mouth speaks.

To all who are defending this woman, may I ask this question? What would your reaction be to "Suck on that Niggers" of "Suck on that Kikes" or "Suck on that Spics"......are we getting the picture children? There can never be a context that would allow my examples to be considered acceptable or condoned, and rightly so. Yet, here we are, condoning the use of "Faggot" because well, she didn't really mean it. BULL. She knew what she wrote, she what it meant and frankly I am getting just a bit tired of hearing any defence for this. It is homophobic, it is insulting, it is what it is, a disparaging and hateful statement.....period. If you disagree, then please, the next time your team wins, tweet one of the above and tell me how the works out for you.

That's the problem, they demean us and call us fagots but then say they mean no offense. Is there another meaning to those words? I am glad jaguar did what they did, and if I could afford one I would certainly buy one.

It is homophobic for a straight person to use the word "faggot" in a derogatory way. Even if you have a gay friend. No exceptions. I would think that at least much was obvious.

Stephanie was named "Pacific Rim Swimmer of the Year" by one of the swimming magazines. Gives a whole slant on the term "rimmer." I'm not being insensitive, just creative.

Faggot is derived from the French word faggot and means a bundle of sticks used as kindling for fire. It is believed that this was transferred on to gay men during the middle ages when the strangled bodies of gay men were often placed with faggots when having public burnings of witches, Jews, and other "enemies" or people blamed for plagues. The history behind the word makes it incredibly offensive and it should not be used. Just as the N word should not be used. To me they are equally offensive. Is this girl homophobic? Not necessarily. Incredibly stupid? Yes. Needs to be educated as to what the word means? Yes.

What I find interesting, is this wasn't just a word that was "blurted out." She had to TYPE the sentence and then hit "send". That takes a bit more thought and provides at least a few more seconds to consider whether or not to send it. I think it was a very poor choice of words (obviously). Do I think she's a raging homophobe because of it? No, I don't. But I do think it was insensitive, very bad judgement and poor sportsmanship.
