Robocall Targets Gay D.C. Pol

JIM GRAHAM DC X180 (SITE) | ADVOCATE.COM

An anonymously released robocall went out to Washington, D.C., residents claiming that district council member Jim Graham, who is up for reelection this fall, paid for a woman's abortion.

Graham, who is gay, is running against Jeff Smith and Bryan Weaver. They said they have no connection to the calls.

"Jim Graham paid for an abortion for his male companion's chief of staff's girlfriend. It's no secret, as reported by a local newspaper," the call said. "Paying to take the life is evil, especially when you weren't even the parent. Jim Graham is wretched, immoral, and doesn't deserve to represent us. Let's get a decent human being to fight for our children, not kill them. Graham is sick and we can do better. Do not vote for Jim Graham.''

According to Metro Weekly, the calls were referring to Graham's ties to Ted Loza, his former chief of staff. Graham reportedly paid $3,200 for the abortion with his personal credit card and was repaid by Loza, who was arrested last year on federal bribery charges.

The D.C. primary election is to be held Tuesday, September 14.

I'm opposed to abortion being allowed except when the mother would otherwise die. I, however, don't believe people who disagree with me are ''evil''. I'm sure the politician is a lovely person although I'd hope he would agree with me on abortion. Abortion is a huge issue. I'm an agnostic who supports marriage equality, the separation of church and state, fairer treatment of immigrants, etc. Abortion is not a matter of choice as we are restricted in our choices when they effect others. The most libertarian of libertarians would accept that restriction. I believe all fetuses are unborn children who deserve protection. Much more protection is afforded to children when they pass through the birth canal and I don't see that as logical. Women who have an abortion don't deserve to suffer the abuse they hear from the Christian Right. I, however, consider myself to be a much differerent type of abortion opponenet. I also oppose the death penalty.

@Carl: Unfortunately, there's no coverage of robocalls in the Do Not Call Registry. Even if there were, the Do Not Call registry doesn't apply to either POLITCAL ads or calls originating from "non-profit" groups.

I don't care what he did or did not do. I wouldn't want to hear about it via some tacky unsolicited call. Shouldn't robocalls be covered by the Do Not Call Registry?

Jackson, you took the words right out of my mouth. A "religious" group or memvers associated strongly with one (or more religious groups) slandering and wanting nothing more than to ruin a otherwise public-serving private person in the name of morality. Amen.
