MP Turns Down Dinner With Gay Iceland Leader

Calling the visit an affront to the small island province's social values, an MP in the Faroe Islands will not be attending the upcoming state banquet for Iceland's gay prime minister, Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir (pictured, left), and her wife.

The conservative politician, Jenis av Rava, brushed off the controversy, which was reported in Icelandic publications and the gay British website Pink News. In a statement on his website, Av Rava said of his decision not to attend, "I do not make a habit of going out in the evening unless my wife is also invited. I would much rather stay at home with her. This is not new behavior, it's been like this for years. No one should be surprised."

Sparsely populated and located in the north Atlantic Ocean between Iceland and Scotland, the Faroe Islands are an autonomous province of Denmark.

It's a little odd that any obscure gay SPORTS story in the entire world, the Advocate is all over it. (Tho maybe we Americans can't tell if a story on, say, cricket is 100% accurate!) But they don't seem to have an atlas or any maps over there.

I'm from the Faroes Islands and his name is not Jenis av Rava but Rana. He is the leader of the Centerparty which is a christian party with people who are hardcore liberals (privatizing everything) and those who believe in the whole take care of those less fortunate (sosialist but without the aversion to religion.) The only thing that really unites the party is the whole religion thing so they aren't that much of a threat to the ABC coaliton. A is the peoples party which is a party that is very business oriented most of them are liberals to varying degrees. B is the Connection party (in lack of a better word) they believe that we should be a part of Denmark. C is the Unity party a very socialist party. The gay rights aspects of the three parties is a little vague in that the members of the parties can take their own stance on the subject.

Not again.. There's a reason the Faroes are referred to as the "Northsea Taleban" among the gay community in Denmark.

It originally said British - obviously The Advocate made the correction after my first post. And by the way - the adjective is Faroese.

The original article did say "British." The Advocate is notorious for publishing an article with errors and then revising them as the day goes along. Wouldn't it be so nice if the publishers copy edited everything before it got published online? A person can dream.

It doesn't say British. The only time the word "British" is used is in the description of a gay website. The last sentence of the story states "the Faroe Islands are an autonomous province of Denmark."

I really wish the Advocate could hire reporters who know something about the world, or can at least read.

Why does the headline say British MP? The Faroe Islands are a colony of Denmark. They are not British.
