A New York City official and a museum administrator have tied the knot in Connecticut in a show of solidarity with their gay and lesbian friends who can’t get married in New York, the Associated Press reports.

Manhattan borough president Scott Stringer and Elyse Buxbaum were married in a civil ceremony last week at City Hall in New Haven. Stringer issued a statement Wednesday saying it was an "incredibly meaningful day" for the couple.

New York’s state senate last year voted down a bill that would have allowed same-sex marriage. Connecticut has had marriage equality has since 2008.

I've always felt that people of conscious should boycott marriage and weddings until this discrimination is ended. While this is a nice step, they still get the benefit of having their marriage recognized at home and by the Fed.

suzzane, the difference is that you can not get married in Iowa and have Illinois recognize your marriage, gays can get married in Connecticut and the state of New York recognizes those marriages. That makes the action of the Manhattan burrough president more impressive. It helps point out the lack of rationality in NY.

I wish I had the luxury of being married on one state and having it recognized in another. While I appreciate their gesture, it is meaningless bc I cannot do that with my wife.

Congrats!! WOW, what a WONDERFUL jesture. If EVERYONE in the country would do things like that, among other "little things" then MAYBE?? it would make a real difference. Just TOTALLY FUBAR that in the USA of AMERICA in 2010...2010...2010 PEOPLE. I know there will ALWAYS be BIGOTS, "RIGHT WING NUTS, TEA PARTIERS, MOST REPUBLICANS and "TALIBAN CHRISTIANS" that HATE, HATE, HATE this group or that group...and I will die for their right to hate us...BUT THEY DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT TO MAKE ME BELIEVE AND LIVE BY THEIR LAWS...As long as I am not violating someone else's CIVIL RIGHTS/HUMAN RIGHTS...then what the F**K!! And if that think I'm going to hell (if there is a place) then that's my right and I'll see them there too. But other than this have a nice day.
