Nate Berkus Ready for Daytime

NATE BERKUS SHOW X390 (COURTESY) | ADVOCATE.COM

Is America ready for an openly gay male daytime talk-show host? Nate Berkus thinks so.

It's a good thing, since The Nate Berkus Show, an hour-long syndicated program, will hit the tube next week. A protégé of daytime queen Oprah Winfrey, Berkus described his own show to New York as a high-quality art gallery, yet accessible to everyday people, specifically his target audience of women.

When asked whether the female audience that tuned into The Oprah Winfrey Show specifically to watch him knew he was "unavailable to women in a certain way," Berkus said he interpreted it to be more than just a simple factor of attraction.

"I think it’s, actually, how available I am to women," he said in an interview Thursday. "My whole life really has been a conversation with women. When the guys were in the family room watching football I was in the kitchen getting in the way, finding out what was really going on. I’ve always related to women. There’s always been a strong woman who has helped me get to the next level."

Berkus is about 16 years too late to be a pioneer in this regard. Anyone remember The Charles Perez Show?

@Scott is so right that '..the United States has a long way to go in terms of 'mainstreaming' gay...' people in general. Remember that there was a time when men with ‘flair,’ whether gay or not, had no place on American TV until shows like ‘America’s Next Top Model’ and ‘Queer Eye for the Straight Guy’ came along, so that now our most fabulous are all over TV. But we can’t kid ourselves, ‘The Nate Berkus Show’ will only be on television for as long as it is sustained by ratings. Whereas our (mainly) brothers in non-entrainment TV remain closeted, hence the ’…long way to go...’

I kind of agree with David, but from a different angle; I live in Dublin, Ireland, and the Irish get a good balance of US, Irish and British television. There are far more openly gay television hosts in the UK and Ireland than there seems to be in the US, but Western Europeans seem a lot more laissez-faire about the whole thing. While it may be good that this guy (who I've noticed only a few times on Oprah) is getting his own show, and therefore is a step in the right direction, nationwide broadcasting in the United States has a long way to go in terms of 'mainstreaming' gay hosts whether males or female.

I love it that I'm the only one currently posting on this story and it's been up for awhile... Nothing to see here folks. Welcome to our 'almost' inclusion into mainstream culture....
