Gay Sex Scene Restored to 1972 Film

A gay sex scene excised from the 1972 film Score will be restored when the film premieres on home video in October. Directed by cult filmmaker Radley Metzger, Score was based on a 1971 off-Broadway play that starred Sylvester Stallone and was one of the first mass-market erotic films to explore couples that swing both ways.

The uncensored version of the film contains seven minutes of gay sex scenes between actors Gerald Grant and Cal Culver, who also worked in adult films, including the seminal classic Boys in the Sand, under the name Casey Donovan.

The Advocate's review of the film on its initial release said, “It will appeal to just about any sexual appetite.” The uncensored version of Score is scheduled to be released on DVD and Blu-ray October 12.

Maybe someday they'll show Two Lane Blacktop, if they ever take out the attempted gay pickup that goes bad for Dennis Hopper ( gets thrown out of a moving GTO). I guess they added it to keep it from being ALL gay...two guys in a seriously souped up 55 Chevy that don't seem interested in the only girl they meet. In fact they make her sit in back where there's no seat, just their occasionally used racing slick tires.

What's "premiering" is the restored version of SCORE; the version without the gay sex scene has been available on DVD for years. When I included the film in 101 MUST-SEE MOVIES FOR GAY MEN (Advocate Books), screenwriter Jerry Douglas -- who in the 1980s and beyond would go on to become a legendary gay porn director -- told me about the scene and said that it was going to be restored on DVD. This was in 2005; I'm glad to hear it's finally happening.

Saw this at the Castro a few years ago. Everyone was so charged afterward and I picked up a couple as we both exited the movie. Wow, talk about great sex. Have a party and play this film, see what happens...

In 1970, I saw the play the film is based on at the Manhattan Theatre Club, then an off-broadway venue. As a 25 year old man "Score" helped me realize that my being gay wasn't a bad thing. I saw the edited film on VHS and I'm anxious to see it restored.

The only time that I ever saw this film was in its initial release. I had no idea that the film had been censored since then. It's been a long time since I've seen the film but, as I recall, there were at least seven minutes that made it really worth watching. Thanks for keeping it intact.
