Maryland Gov. Would Sign Marriage Bill

MARTIN OMALLEY X390

Maryland governor Martin O'Malley said Thursday he would sign a marriage equality bill if he were reelected and the state’s general assembly were able to pass one, according to The Washington Post.

"I don't have a crystal ball to predict how this goes," O'Malley, a Democrat, said during an “Ask the Governor” segment on a Maryland news show, "but I do know this: I know the people of our state well enough that for all of the differences and diversities of backgrounds and opinions, that all of us want to find a way to craft our laws in such a way that it treats people equally under the law."

O’Malley has previously said he prefers civil unions to marriage, but added, "Should the legislature find a way to reach that compromise in another way, I would sign a bill like that ... we need to find a way to support equal rights, and that is true when it comes to committed gay and lesbian couples and the unions in which they choose to enter and raise children and all the issues that go with that."

2nd Mike in Chicago. Also, anyone in Gay Baltimore knows O'Malley has a gay brother who is frequently out and about. The governor is most definitely a supporter of gay causes. Note that I said the "governor" - by default a POLITICIAN, and all that that entails. I know you all want everyone to swoop in on white horses and magically make everything okay, but life doesn't work that way. Quit bitching and stay tuned .. and for the guy in Princess Anne who claims he's going to vote for Erlich, I laugh if you think you're going to get any progress out of him on any social issue. Ha! I say. ; )

this is the same governor who threw the entire gay community under the bus when he said that gay marriage was against the sacraments and he thus opposed it... he is a liar and has done so little for us...the executive orders he has signed can be easily reversed by a subsequent govenor...he's not to be trusted and I will vote for a republican in the next election...

...but our government MADE IT a legal union and as such, it must now be treated that way. Civil Unions, while there is still marriage, is nothing less than second class. Perhaps "marriage" never should have been turned into a government-sanctioned legal relationship, but since it has, it must be made available to all.

I would prefer civil unions to marriage for all! A government should not be issuing religious certificates to anyone.

Mobtown Guy, in Baltimore, hit the nail on the head!! Maryland, thankfully, is no stranger to 'progressive' governors; Parris Glendenning immediately comes to mind. The problem IS their legislature which, sadly, does not feel inclined to follow their governors lead. Perhaps the voters will correct that, come November.

A politician is a politician, they make up stories, with their sickingly sweet smiles, about stuff they are going to do if you elect them, then as soon as they get behind that big old desk, it's deny, deny, deny! What do they think, we were either born yesterday or we fell of the apple cart yesterday.

Okay, Wishes .. O'Malley is a governor, not a king. The problem here is with the legislature. Don't be so jaded, it accomplishes nothing.
