Schwarzenegger Repeals Antigay Law

California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a bill Wednesday to repeal a 60-year-old antigay law requiring state officials to seek a cure for homosexuality.

Though the law was barely enforced, "It was misguided and foolish at the time. It's completely unacceptable now," Assemblywoman Bonnie Lowenthal said, according to the Contra Costa Times.

The law was prompted after a 6-year-old Los Angeles girl, Linda Glucoft, was molested and murdered by the grandfather of one of her friends in 1949. After much public outcry, the state enacted laws to support the study of pedophilia, which then also roped in the study of eradicating homosexuality. The remaining part of the law, which evaluates the inner workings of pedophiles, will stay on the books as a memorial to Glucoft.

Let me get this right....60 years ago they were searching for a cure for us homos. 40 years ago we were taken off the mental illness list. It's taken this long to pass a bill? Personally, I wish they would put us back on the mental illness list. I could then call in to work, "I can't come in today, I'm still gay! I won't be in". (I surely wouldn't want you to 'catch' it)! Just send me my disability check....

What a misleading headline! Has anyone at the Advocate ever had a journalism class? Schwarzenegger SIGNED a bill, passed by BOTH chambers of the CA legislature, which repealed an antigay law. All the "gay-marriage veto governor" did was sign his name.

So... a 6 year-old is molested and then murdered by a straight, heterosexual man, and the outrage over this is translated into passing a law...about curing homosexuality??? Very good example of how a.n.y.t.h.i.n.g that can be is flipped around and blamed on gays. I know this happened 60 years ago, but have times really changed all that much? I live in FL, which prohibits gay couples from adopting. We like to think these attitudes are only in the past, but they aren't.

Geee how nice of ya Gov.. See everybody, Mr. SchwarzaNAZI IS on our side. Just don't ask him to sign Marriage Rights legislation into law or support the repeal of DADT, or co-sign onto a nationwide ENDA bill. Way to go Arnie, at least your makin' SOME progress. Geeeeeez.
