Mourners gathered Sunday night in New Jersey and New York to remember Tyler Clementi, the Rutgers University freshman who killed himself after two students secretly streamed his sexual encounter with another man live over the Internet.

According to the Star-Ledger, hundreds of mourners gathered at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, where they struggled to keep candles lit under the rain. Brief speeches were followed by 30 minutes of silence for Clementi, who jumped off the George Washington Bridge on September 22, three days after roommate Dharun Ravi accessed a hidden camera from the dorm room of Molly Wei to transmit images of him and another man. Ravi and Wei face invasion of privacy charges and possible prosecution for a hate crime.

“The handful of speakers who addressed the crowd stressed the need to understand diversity,” the Star-Ledger reported.

In New York City a vigil was held for Clementi in Washington Square Park in Greenwich Village. Participants included Gov. David Paterson, city council speaker Christine Quinn, Cheyenne Jackson, and Kyra Sedgwick.

Governor Paterson, whose term ends this year, vowed to pass legislation against cyber bullying, according to the New York Daily News.

"I know how it is, as do so many of you, to be singled out for persecution for nothing more than being who you were born as," said Paterson, who is blind.

Dear Ron, Thanks for your comment. I absolutely agree with your words. What an incomprehensible and terrible waist of human life, just because of bullying! Such thing should never be allowed happening, anywhere! The question is about principles and human respect - no matter if the victim was gay or straight. If only there were less fanatics with hatred and more people with ability of tolerance for different kinds of people around them. You see, we are not living in stone age any more! Hopefully people will learn their lessons in future.

I've known about this for quite some time. I've tried talking to local gay leaders and said...what can we do...how do we organize and do something....their entire focus is on marriage equality. This is where we are at - single issue activism out of total selfishness rather than the interest of the HEALTH of the GAY COMMUNITY. We only care about our individual selves and to hell with everyone else. This is why very few gay people are coming out. They hang out in the gay chats online, see how we treat each other and say to themselves 'no way am I coming out'. Currently most gay men grow up and figure out who they are in their 30's. Soon that will be in their 50's because they're hiding and nobody's gently pushing them to get involved and meet other gay people. These suicides are not limited to youth - you must know this! There are thousands of gay men who are alone, lonely and are giving up because the str8 world doesn't want them and the gay world doesn't care about them.

The known number of dead from this three week period is now up to nine. I'm sure there were many more that we will never know about. The Advocate and ever other news sources needs to report them all. Not just the four or five that are getting media attention. The bigotry and intolerance of the bible is yet again being taught in Mississippi public schools. How long before one or more of the students at these schools commit suicide due to bible enforce bullying? The nationwide count of gay kids who killed themselves in the last three weeks due to bully now stands at nine. No doubt there are more that are not unknown. Eric Mohat (NY), Seth Walsh (CA), Asher Brown (TX), Tyler Clementi (NJ), Justin Aaberg (MN), and Billy Lucas (IN), Raymond Chase (R.I.) Caleb Nolt (In) and Cody J. Barker (WI)

This saddens me to the core. From across the country, I sit with tears in my eyes wondering what kind of inspiration this young man would have become to others for the rest of his life instead of having it short circuited by a stupid, hate-filled prank. Did they think he'd just get a laugh out of it? It is a hate crime, a life is ended because of it, and I hope it is pursued in that way. At any point along the way, good sense could have intervened to stop what they were doing. The perpetrator(s) needs to be fully accountable for this senseless death. The torment this young man must have gone through for three days, made the decision to end his life, walk to the bridge, and take that last step. Can you only imagine the horror.
