Ricky Martin Surprises HRC Dinner

Singer Ricky Martin was the surprise opening guest at the black-tie Human Rights Campaign National Dinner in Washington, D.C., Saturday night. As guests were taking their seats, Martin took the stage to welcome them — and to thank them for welcoming him.

“This is very simple,” he said. “It took me a while, but tonight I’m here and I want to say that I want to add my voice to yours. And I’m so happy to be part of this community.”

The night’s keynote speaker was Valerie Jarrett, senior adviser to President Obama, who focused her remarks on the recent suicides among LGBT youth.

“No young person should have to endure a life of relentless taunts and harassment, just because they’re gay,” she said. “On behalf of President Obama, I want to make clear this administration is firmly committed to working with you and other advocates.”

Jarrett highlighted a number of administration initiatives targeting bullying, including the first National Bullying Summit, coordinated by the Department of Education last August, and an alliance of public and private suicide experts, called the National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention, just organized by the Department of Health and Human Services.

“When it comes to putting a stop to the bullying and harassment of LGBT youth, we are not going to let up,” she said. “We are going to stand with you. We are going to stand with every young person in this country who deserves to grow up, learn, have fun, and live their lives.”

As he introduced Jarrett, HRC president Joe Solmonese told the crowd that he and other HRC staffers were flying to Salt Lake City this week to join Equality Utah, the Utah Pride Center, and Affirmation: Gay and Lesbian Mormons to deliver approximately 150,000 petition signatures demanding that Mormon Church leader Boyd Packer correct his recent statement calling same-sex attraction “impure and unnatural.”

“Tonight across the country there are millions of kids struggling with their sexual orientation or their gender identity,” Solmonese said. “They are quite literally under attack by the people that they look up to, people in positions of power, people who falsely perpetrate the idea that being gay is somehow unhealthy or immoral. ... It is horrifying and irresponsible when the second-highest official in the Mormon Church tells the world the being gay is ‘impure and unnatural’ and claims that you can simply pray it away.” (Go here to sign the petition HRC will deliver to Mormon Church headquarters on Tuesday.)

Also on hand at Saturday night’s event were actress Mo’Nique, who introduced honoree Precious director Lee Daniels, Modern Family actors Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet, and Bette Midler, who introduced honoree Pink.

Hopefully Anderson Cooper and Jodie Foster can surprise the attendees of next year's event by coming out in person and stop hiding in the shadows.

@ sweetbrandigirl2004 - I have no problem paying the CEO of a $30-million + org $300,000 or even more. That's not the issue. What I want to pay for is performance and I would want to develop a schematic where the CEO (in this case Joe) received a base salary and then an incremental based on achieving predetermined and identified deliverables. This is not rocket science, just basic good management practice.

Tom you poor poor misguided man. I Think the HRC Kool Aide has gone to your head at these dinners, because you sound like you believe the money you give goes to further equality...hahahaha you silly rabbit. The money goes to pay for more of these exorbitant black tie dinners and for Joe's over $300,000 dollar a year salary, along with the other salaries of those on the HRC Mothership. As far as results from HRC towards equality we have NONE not one accomplishment can they boast. They always are quick to make more promises but as of yet haven't delivered one one. Oh ask Joe about his "Guaranty " that DADT would be repealed this year. Year almost over Joe you better get busy if your going to deliver on that Promise.

I have to wonder if all these people complaining about the HRC giving a fund raising dinner go to such websites as the American Heart Association to bitch about wasting money on fancy parties?

My goodness, just look at all these posts! You sure have been a busy little troll, now haven't you? But, it strikes me as kind of odd that all these supposedly different people would viciously attack a non-profit organization, Even if a lot of folks felt that HRC was totally useless, you'd expect most would just not donate to them. But such vicious hostility from so many supposedly-different people, growling and snarling like a pack of wolves, because HRC is (supposedly) more concerned with black-tie dinners than fighting for equality? How dumb is that? LOL. Here's what is believable. One troll writes all these nasty posts himself using various names to give the impression that most lgbt agree - HRC wastes money on parties for Joe - so that readers won't send any. Hmm? HRC must be effective to make the ultra-conservatives (who else?) want to pay someone to write this stuff (trolls gotta eat too) just to convince us otherwise. So, congratulations Joe, you must be doing something right!

@ Tom in Washington D.C. --- Pardon? Who are you talking to? I gave my money to the HRC. Many times. I certainly feel I have the right to complain about it if I feel it is being misspent! Who's side are YOU on, anyway? Perhaps I read your post incorrectly because I can't believe what I THINK I just read.

I've always found that those who bitch and complain the most about what is wrong with the world, do the least to improve it. As far as sitting down to eat an expensive dinner, it was a fund raiser. The cost of the dinner is considered a donation. This is the way fundraising is done in many organizaitons. As far homeless LGBT kids going hungry on the streeet, it's a shame that any kid is going hungry or on the street.

All this complaining about the HRC is a shame. Realize, the people at the event paid $275 per person (or more) for "the party" and we also made significant donations to continue the movement. Guests like Pink, Ricky Martin, Bette, etc... all donated their time to support our cause. The night was a fundraising event to keep the movement alive. Without a doubt over $1 Million Dollars was donated by the party attendees to help to keep pushing our movement forward. So before you compain about what the HRC does and doesn't do maybe you should relize that over 3,000 people attended who were gay, lesiban, bisexual, trans and MANY straight people. We cared enough to give our hard earned money....you should care enough not to complain about our financial support!
