Mormon Leader Asked to Correct Antigay Statements

BoydPackerx180 (LDS Resources) | Advocate.com

HRC and Utah-based gay rights groups plan to call Tuesday on Mormon leader Boyd K. Packer to correct his statements characterizing marriage equality as immoral and claiming that gay people can be “corrected.”

Earlier this month, Packer, the president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, addressed the 180th semiannual general conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Salt Lake City and, among other statements, denied that gay people “were pre-set and cannot overcome what they feel are inborn tendencies toward the impure and unnatural.”

Protests
greeted the statements from the influential religious leader as the nation coped with a series of LGBT youth suicides. Boyd is next in line for the church presidency.

According to a news release about the Tuesday morning event, “Nearly 150,000 people have signed onto a petition asking Elder Packer to make it right. Today, HRC President Joe Solmonese, Utah Philanthropist Bruce Bastian, Affirmation President David Melson, Equality Utah Executive Director Brandie Balken, Utah Clinical Social Worker Melissa Bird and Utah Pride Center Executive Director Valerie Larabee, will provide their remarks and then travel to the Church Office Building to deliver the petition signatures.”

The Mormon Church made a choice to abandon Polygamy (the practice of one super egoist male of taking many insecure helpless females as sex partners and child factories) after the US Government threatened to arrest the leadership. Then after Civil Rights Legistlation, affirmative action law, many Supreme Court decisions ALL affirming African Americans rights to not be discriminated against, the Church decided that their previous godly revelations were somehow wrong, and chose to allow blacks the priesthood. How many young people will die, how many gay and lesbian citizens will be damaged by this deviant, god- forsaken cult called Mormonism changes its mortal (not divine, not even CLOSE to divine) mind AGAIN and stops killing children?

::sigh:: Despite how ignorant this is and how much I personally disagree with it (and yes, I am a born again Christian. I'm just not a literalist, because when reading books like the Bible, that's just impossible), the fact of the matter is that he was addressing members of a religious community. He has the right to his own opinion, even if it is kind of backward. The US Constitution protects his right to the freedom of speech. I understand the outrage, but really I'm surprised this is news. The Mormons have been saying this for years, so I'm not sure why it's news now. Let him say what he wants. It doesn't make him right. All I can do is keep walking in love toward him and any other hate-speechers and hope that in the long run, love will conquer all.

The Relgious Right, which inculdes the Mormon Church, the Catholic Church and fundamentalist Protestants, has made a religion out of male domination and heterosexuality. It has turned the act of procreation into a religious sacrament. Who needs Hell when so many of these people rejoice in creating a hell on earth for homosexuals?

@Blair: "a big sin in God's eyes". Would you just cut the crap. You are addressing your ridiculous remarks to an intelligent demographic group, and you don't realize how absolutely foolish you sound. Who the hell are you to say what God thinks - were you on the phone to him? At least get some education so that you would more easily get rid of this rubbish from your mind.

@Ken, First off, money is not in the picture and NEVER has been. Our church leaders unlike so many other religions never see the money we send in for Tithing. That money goes out to church buildings, maintenece work, Missionary fund, educational materials, and so on. UNLIKE the Collection plate, all that money goes straight into the pastors POCKET! So nothing to do with money. Yeah. And we're not murderers, we have been the ones that get murdered thank you, due to all ya'll anti-mormons. Ya'll bash us, yet do you ever see us Bash any other religion. Na, NEVER. All ya'll haters out there don't like change. and finally. I too have gay friends, do i support them in their choice No, will i ever, no. But they're still good people, they just need to change life styles, because its not the way to go eternally. And also, i do not seek out websites that support homosexuality. I know nothing of what is on this website, except this article.

This all has to do with pride, YOU homosexuals are so wrapped up in yourselfs, to the point where ya'll think it is okay, and its NOT OK! Same gender relationship and attraction is a big sin in gods eyes, if ya'll can't see that then i guess ya'll are too blind to see. Homosexuality is works of the devil, but ya'll can't see that because you guys are so bound to him. Even though i am not mormon i stand with Packer on this subject. Change or you guys will be eternally damned.

To Whitney, JeffF and Mason Howard: If homosexuals are such flawed, immoral and unworthy creatures, why then do you bother seeking out a website devoted entirely to them? Your actions belie your words. Perhaps a little soul-searching is in order for the true motivation behind your actions.

@ Mike - If I understand correctly, the reason the Mormon church abandon it's anti-black priesthood ban was because of the possibility of losing its tax-exempt status. It's not God that speaks to these church leaders. It's money.

Over the past weeks our nation has seen young men and women, loved and treasured by their families, take their own lives - due to being bullied about being in the GLBT community. And more will do the same. I want the Mormons, LDS Church to know that their blood is on your hands. Yours, and many republicans, and right winged religious extremist. When we have preachers, teachers, elected officials, TV, and Radio, talk show host and the like continue making statements about the un-equality of GLBT people what else can we expect from the listening ears of our children, seeking approval for themselves, and finding it so easy to fall in line, and bully GLBT folk. Mormons are murders, period. The Jesus of the 21st century is male, female, black, white, rich, poor, gay and straight, Jesus in the flesh is us. And the Mormons are proactively crucifying him in board day light. Pilot, you can't wash your hands and get by with murder. If you could judge yourself, you would already be in HELL.

As i see it, when ya'll say "judge ye not," are nothing but HYPOCRITES. Because thats what ya'll are doing right now. Judging. God created Man and Woman to procreate. That is one of our main purposes on earth, but how can one procreate if it is a homosexual relationship? exactly THEY CANNOT! And Elder Packer was giving a warning, its all about agency really. It is our choice to choose what we do, but not our concequences. You can choose to continue in this way of homosexuality and deal with the concequences of eternal time, OR change and be happy for all eternity. Now think, if the Pope were to say this since he's an HOLY man, would all you go against him. Most likely not. This all has to do with a predetermine hate against mormons. God wants us all to be happy and return to live with him and its just a simple warning, that ya'll have blown way out of porportion.
