Gold's Gym Gives Money to Rove Org.

GOLD'S GYM X390 (GETTY) | ADVOCATE.COM

Robert Rowling, the CEO of the company that owns Gold's Gym, has donated more than $2 million to American Crossroads, Karl Rove's organization that works to elect antigay politicians, according to website Change.org. Rowling is the head of TRT Holdings, which owns the chain of gyms, popular with LGBT people across the nation, and is one of several people who are helping to get Rove's organization running.

Among the candidates supported by American Crossroads are Rep. Roy Blunt of Missouri, who received a 0% rating from the Human Rights Campaign and Nevada GOP Senate candidate Sharron Angle, who endorsed a statement that said there was no evidence to suggest homosexuality was biological and that scientists who argue otherwise are flawed.

Change.org suggests signing a petition to encourage Gold's Gym to stop supporting antigay politicians, which can be done by clicking here.

TRT Holdings owns 72 corporate gyms as well as the franchise rights. I fear anti-gay agenda supported by Rowling and TRT Holding. Jim Snow is the prez and ceo of the corporate gyms, David Fowler senior vp (east coast area) Gary Ranchel vp (central west coast areas). Help by sending them emails of your concerns. jsnow@goldsgym.com ... dfowler@goldsgym.com ... granchel@goldsgym.com Go to www.goldsgym.com and find your local gym and email the general manager of the gym you use. I suspect a gaycott of this may help, in my gym I see my lgbt "families" and our money should not be used to support a political agenda that is trying to destroy our community. I believe as a person that supports a corporate gym I deserve answers and at least a withdrawal of monies or same amount used to support my community. Locally as well as nationally.

This is for TJ and some of the others: Gold's are franchises, so targeting one particular person is actually counter-productive. ALL of the Gold's in the South Bay are owned and operated by a partnership headed by Jerry McCool. There are quite a few gays at my gym that I know from various groups but they aren't openly gay at Gold's. There is no open cruising that I've ever seen. I've heard "rumors" about what goes on in the locker room and showers but have never been in either. People are too fixated on what other people are doing with their genitals. Gold's is a no frills gym and EVERYONE (male, female, gay, straight, lesbian) should be able to go there and work out and not have to think about political and social controversy. Find out who owns your specific franchise and communicate with them directly, don't target all Gold's Gyms.

That’s one city down… how many to go? I just read the salon.com article, and I'm very impressed with the SF Gold's response to this. Bravo! Lousy situation, but they seem to have handled it well and with great respect for our community. The threat of boycott and major departure of members probably had a least a little influence on this. But this is only Gold’s in SF - how about the franchisees in your city? This isn’t just about one evil rich man. We need to let big right wing money know that we will not sit back and watch them take our money and spend it against us. Other companies and billionaires have done this before, and they will again, unless we make it clear that they will suffer for it.

Salon.com and Washington Post have now published Gold's SF's departure from Gold's Corporate. They are matching the fees they have to pay to corporate to LGBT charities. Go Gold's SF! Well done!!

Thank you Eric. I really appreciate that you are happy working there. No sarcasm, I really mean that. And that they run a pro-gay business in SF. Once again, that's smart business. But are you familiar with their political stances or what they support with their profits? Not how they behave around you and run the SF gyms, but where they stand on human rights issues, and what they contribute to them (or against them). What do you think their profits from the gay community add up to? Once again, I'm open to this being a corporate not franchisee issue, but their political views and donations are worth finding out about given this disgusting news. Please at least consider that we might deserve at least a statement from them about it, rather than us all guessing.

I worked very hard to get to a gay city from a smaller town to not have to deal with this from an employer. i have lived in SF for 5 years and recently became an employee of golds during school, this is by a wide margin the best place i have ever worked...as a gay. There has never been any leniency from management over homophobic people wandering in with any malice-and i HAVE met zsolt, (a primary shareholder in our franchise).tho i will not work here forever, this will definitely be my gym as long as im in the city, and i think it would be a tragedy if such a gay-positive place were to be damaged from a lack of information. i would encourage people with questions to go to one of the golds in the city to talk to management about the situation or sales, the front counter staff are not included in our regional meetings. i wrk in golds SOMA sales office and am happy to talk to folks about this. we r no happier about this than u, and r wrking out what to do as a proudly gay-allied business

I’m gay, I exercise, but I don’t go to Folsom or Pride, nor do I read Gloss. I am interested in political views and financial support though. I’ll remain open to this being a corp. not franchisee issue. So let's hear a response from Sebastian with specifics about his political views and if he EVER supports right wing interests. How will he respond to Golds for supporting those who hate us? No attack, but we should know. Maybe Tim can organize that. Many companies have huge gay staffs. They know that having gay staff and spending $$$ on "gay-friendly" efforts can make huge sales. That’s smart business, but we need to think about what they support with the profits. Do they demonstrate belief in LGBT civil rights? Or at least not oppose us? I like a lot of the gay and straight people at Golds, but I don’t want to support national anti-gay interests to honor their jobs. “Our homes”? “Screaming and shrieking”? Is that anybody that speaks up? Do you work at Gold’s? Are you gay?

OK Everyone! Before we go running through the streets screaming and shrieking lets remember a few things here: Remember what both of the SF gyms look like during Pride! Remember almost every one of the staff are Gay! Remember the most anticipated Float at the Pride Parade! Remember last years Folsom 9th Street and this years Folsom 10th Street District Events! The very same events you guys danced at which gives money not to Golds Gym but to us in our community for us to take care of our own! Pick up any issue of Gloss Magazine over the last year even and read Workin' It by Troy and you'll see how much Sebastian Jackovics GOLD'S Gym franchise has supported us and that's just within the last year alone. GOLD'S Gym Bay Area is not the enemy here. Not At All!! Have you ever seen a 24hour Pride Float? You ever see a Club One sponsored event to raise money for PAWS? Ever see Crunch do a benefit for Aids Research? The SF Gold's Gyms are our homes. Just think first.

Thanks to michael in SF for the heads up about those gyms. Went online and did a little lookin' around. They seem more like spas for the fairly wealthy(Equinox and Club One). LOL! I'm looking for something a bit smaller and a bit more affordable that(ideally)is LOCALLY GAY owned and operated. For starters I'm gettin' kinda bored with all the hetero females coming into our gyms staring and drooling. Don't the heteros have their own gyms they can hang out in?? In San Francisco of all places you'd think there would be a few GAY MALE only gyms!! WTF???
