Hawkins Ready to Be GOProud's Lover

Singer Sophie B. Hawkins is not only bisexual, she's bipartisan -- the 1990s hit-maker will headline gay Republican group GOProud's Big Party February 10, during the Conservative Political Action Conference, GOProud announced Thursday.

Actually, Hawkins, best known for the 1992 hit "Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover," has preferred to describe herself as "omnisexual" or use no label at all, but she has been in relationships with both men and women. Also, while she campaigned for Hillary Clinton in the 2008 Democratic presidential primaries, she told The Hill last year that although she has identified with the Democratic and Green parties, she was open to supporting Republicans and wouldn't mind seeing them control Congress.

"I want the Congress that really is going to listen to the people," she told the publication. "I really don't care what party it is anymore." More recently, she has written on her blog, "Having to be a Democrat or a Republican is giving up my freedom of thought."

Hawkins has criticized President Obama for what she saw as his slow response to the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, and last year she released a single, "The Land, the Sea and the Sky," to benefit the Waterkeeper Alliance, a group working on Gulf cleanup efforts.

The invitation-only GOProud party will be held from 9 p.m. to midnight at the 18th Street Lounge in Washington, D.C. Another celebrity guest will be conservative Internet mogul Andrew Breitbart, who recently joined GOProud's advisory council.

Some right-wing groups and individuals are boycotting the February 10-12 CPAC over GOProud's presence. But in the press release announcing the party, Breitbart said the event will show that "the vast majority of the conservative movement is united and welcomes GOProud and any other conservative into the fold. The truth is that it is liberals in America who are bent on dividing people, on forcing people into ideological boxes based merely on their race, religion, sex or sexual orientation."
