Barbara Bush for Marriage Equality

The daughter of a Republican president who once endorsed passage of a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage has spoken out in support of marriage equality.

"I am Barbara Bush, and I am a New Yorker for marriage equality," the 29-year-old daughter of President George W. Bush said in a short video posted Monday on YouTube by the Human Rights Campaign. "New York is about fairness and equality. And everyone should have the right to marry the person that they love."

She joins her mother, Laura Bush, in pro-marriage equality sentiment. During a May appearance on Larry King Live to promote her memoir, Spoken From the Heart, the former first lady said, "When couples are committed to each other and love each other" they should have "the same sort of rights that everyone has."

TheNew York Times reports that Bush's twin sister, Jenna, has not spoken publicly on the issue. A spokesman for President Bush declined to comment.
