Antigay Forces Run for El Paso Council

Every race for the El Paso, Texas, city council has a candidate connected to the movement to rescind city employees’ domestic-partner benefits, according to an investigation by local TV station KVIA.

Voters last year approved a ballot measure rescinding the benefits for municipal workers’ same-sex and unmarried opposite-sex partners, but its vague wording meant it went further than its proponents intended — for instance, it could take away benefits from spouses of elected officials, as elected officials are technically not city employees. It has not gone into effect yet because it is being challenged in court, with a judge expected to issue a ruling in April. The council had OK’d the benefits in 2009, and the coverage began to be offered to employees in 2010.

On Monday, the last day to file for a place on the ballot in the May 14 election, KVIA reported that in all four of this year’s council races (the council has eight seats in all, with terms staggered) there are candidates tied to the antigay effort, spearheaded by El Pasoans for Traditional Family Values.

One of the movement’s leaders, minister Manny Hinojosa (pictured), is one of four challengers to incumbent Ann Lilly in the city’s first district. “I’ve got God and the Holy Spirit on my side,” he told the city council during a discussion of the benefits issue last fall. He also said some city workers have a “conflict of interest” in the matter because “some of you have the lifestyle we're discussing today.”

Other candidates connected with the antigay move are Sonia Brown in the fifth district, Zulema Lazarin in the sixth, and Malcolm McGregor in the eighth. Read more here.

David Greene. Who said anything about immigration? I agree with you, they ate idiots but don't bring the issue of legal status into this. Don't bash on another minority. It's comments like yours that set us back.

Dan, the issue is that no matter how many gay people there are in Texas, there are just as many if not more right-wing religious people willing and eager to vote against us. This is an issue for that very reason. Wishing El Paso the best in beating these guys.

Why aren't these idiots running on illegal alien issues? Maybe because they are illegal aliens. My family got in line and came legally through Ellis Island. If they had remained in Spain, I could be getting married legally today. Instead, I'm a 2nd class citizen paying 1st Class taxes.

So where are the gays of Texas? It's a large state, there must be gays around to counter these idiots.

This is a pretty bad turn of events, for us. every thing they are trying to do revolves around making sure that Gays and Lesbians get no rights or recognition of any kind. They led a drive that successfully overturned the city's giving health benefits to unmarried partners. The vote took away the benefits from straight as well as gay partners. The vote was challenged in court and problems were found with the revisions. Now, these people are running to push their views and their buybull on everybody. They would rather see everybody suffer than a few Gays get equal benefits. This bunch is extremely at demonizing Gays. One of them made the statement that "Homosexuals are not human, they are less than human." I hate these mofos! I will do everything that I can to help make sure they don't get elected.

What a mess. Idiots claiming the right to interpret the Bible and inflict their ideas on other people. Why can't they just go dance with poisonous snakes and spiders or something.

It is critical that equality-minded residents of El Paso get out there, canvas neighborhoods, and ensure that these bigots are not elected!
