Minister: “I Have Done a 180” on Gays

MURRAY RICHMOND X390 (yukonpresbytery.com) | ADVOCATE.COM

A former Presbyterian minister describes the evolution of his views on homosexuality from condemnation to acceptance in an essay published Sunday by the online magazine Salon.

Early in his career, writes Murray Richmond (pictured), “I did not believe one could be a practicing homosexual and a Christian.” He began to change his mind because of interactions with three people, he says. He had a long online conversation with a man struggling to reconcile his homosexuality with his Christian beliefs; he had a gay parishioner request an exorcism to turn him straight; and he met a woman whose husband, a minister, had left her for another man — yet she was not bitter and still considered her ex-husband “the best minister she had ever known.”

“These experiences shook my worldview,” Richmond writes. “It became clear to me that none of these men had chosen to be gay, just as I had never chosen to be heterosexual.” Later, when he gave up his church ministry to become a hospital chaplain, he took time to do further study of the Bible’s statements on homosexuality and concluded that “they were not as clear as I had supposed they were. At this point, I have done a 180 on the topic. And I believe it’s a change for the good.”

Richmond, now working as a legislative aide in the Alaska state senate, ends his column by noting, “The constitution of the Presbyterian Church does not explicitly forbid a pastor from being a thief, a murderer, or an egotistical jerk. ... It does prohibit a gay person from becoming a pastor. All I can ask is: Why?”

I keep seeing the message that gay is not a choice, but even if that is true that does not make it right. People fight against strong urges to do the wrong thing every day. Some have unexplained urges to steal, or set fires, or lie. We all have our crosses to bare but saying something is right just because you are prone to it does not make it so. In the Bible the adulteress was forgiven, but also told to go forth and "Sin no more." No where is it stated that her behavior was acceptable. Yes, we are all sinners, but there is a difference between sinning and being truly repentant and choosing to make it a lifestyle, then judging others for refusing to acknowledge it as legitimate. Yes, gays can be good people, no they are not all evil, but the urges they CHOOSE TO ACT ON are sinful and that cannot be denied.

Hi, this is the author of the article. I just wanted to respond to two things from the comments. First, I did not say I was sorry in the piece. I am sorry for what I said and thought about gays and lesbians. I am sorry for the way I voted on the issue over the years. I am sorry for the things I might have said (my memory is not good enough to remember them all) that might have encouraged people to discriminate against gays and lesbians. (Also I am learning a lot and if I use terms that offend, I don't mean to.) The second is that the person who is afraid I will come out of the closet need not worry. I am pretty straight. Have been for years, and I don't see that changing. I appreciate the positive feedback. I am still learning.

A big change came over me the day that I realized that not only had I not chosen to be gay... but it wouldn't matter if I had! There is nothing intrinsically wrong with being gay, no "harm" to society that isn't done by anyone else who never has a child. We hear people over and over say "I am ok with them now that I understand they didn't choose it." I say choosing or not choosing aside, there is still no reason to hate gays that is not founded in societal pressure or religion.

And the words "I apologize for the harm I have caused ..." and/or "I seek forgiveness from LGBT folks for the injuries the Church has done them ..." appear exactly WHERE in this account?

Nice article, but it won't get me to grace the doors of a church. Had enough of the divorced-fat-gossips and their hypocitical bullshit for a lifetime, while they condem others in their self-righteousness.

as a gay ChristianIt took me several years to reconcile my Beleief spiritualkly with my internsal impetus of knowing I was gay Yet instead of feeling condemned by my faith I was lifted by it. because instead of focusing on the negativity so many tried to force upon me from the pages of the Scriptures I rather found the supportive clarity of Christ through His Holy Spirit of unconditional LOVE.I know the strength of my conviction to the Lord and the Love He has for me and All His children no matter how they are. Be Blessed!

I rejoice that this man found a conversion, but....playing the part of the Devil's Advocate brings out he cynical side of me! That being said, why do I have this sinking feeling that we will see this man come out of his closet! Just saying!

I'm glad he finally saw the light! He realized he was wrong and he changed for the better. A true Christian! If he had a church here, I'd attend it. And I'm a Catholic! lol Anyway, well done Reverand and thank you!!

This minister did a 180 on homosexuality; Ted Haggert did a 69.
