Chick-fil-A Gave Nearly $2M to Antigay Groups Just in 2009

The Georgia-based fast-food chain Chick-fil-A has never hid its conservative leanings, but now the full scope of its antigay agenda is coming to light — according to Equality Matters, the charitable arm of Chick-fil-A distributed over $1.7 million to antigay groups in 2009 alone.

Chick-fil-A president Dan Cathy has said that his company doesn't carry an "agenda against anyone," but it's hard to believe that after considering their "philanthropy." Some of the groups the corporation has contributed to through WinShape, the side company created in 1984 for corporate giving, include organizations that not only actively work to end marriage equality, but also groups that attempt to "convert" gay people and one that's considered a "hate group" by the Southern Poverty Law Center. Here are some of WinShape's contributions, according to tax records from 2009:

- Marriage & Family Legacy Fund: $994,199
- Fellowship of Christian Athletes: $480,000
- National Christian Foundation: $240,000
- Focus on the Family: $12,500
- Eagle Forum: $5,000
- Exodus International: $1,000
- Family Research Council: $1,000

Go to Equality Matters to see how these groups work against LGBT equality. A request for comment from Chik-fil-A's corporate offices was not immediately returned.

@George, @Bruce, @Sheila, @Valerie, @et. al. For your christian sanity, I pray to the same Christ that one of your children, grandchildren, or whatever relative, does NOT come to you and say '... I am gay!' I pray this not so much for you, but for him or her!

It's always been amazing to me that the people who purport to be the most 'Christian' are the least tolerant of other people who are different from them. Christ surrounded himself with the lowest of humanity, including prostitutes! Yet a 'Christian' uses the word 'despicable' when talking about gays. Hum...what's wrong with this picture. Oh, in case you're wondering, I'm heterosexual, retired USAF Lt Col, with a loving wife, 4 children, and 2 grandchildren.

The shame of this is Chick-fil-A can be crucified for supporting causes they believe in (even though politically incorrect) as opposed to organizations that can bash Christian or otherwise conservative organizations with impunity. Chick-fil-A does more good in their community in a week, than the readers and editors of this publication do in a year. Talk about a hate group, this publication is a hate group. If people don't agree with your view, they are hated and vilified. If you want to PRACTICE gay or lesbian activities, that's your business. But don't try to force the rest of the world to agree with or support your life style. The litmus test for behaviour is 'what if everybody did it'?

I don't care if gay supporters agree with me or not. America was built upon Godly beliefs and our forefathers were Christians. This meant that they observed Sunday as a day to go to a Godly place of family worship. Just because gay and lesbian people want to flaunt their despicable lifestyles and expect everyone else to roll over and play dead, i.e., not say anything does not change the historica lfacts surrounding this country. A penis was created for a vagina and vice versa. A penis was not created for an anus and a vagina was not created for a tongue. How perverse can you get? And you want God to have mercy on my soul? You require lots of mercy if your beliefs are contrary to what God teaches us in His holy word. May God have mercy upon you, not me.

@ Brandon R. You're obviously the idiot for bashing on Sheila for stating a simple fact. It's the truth and the truth hurts sometimes and obviously you can't handle the truth. There are words for people like you though: whiny, crying, hissy-fit throwing, 3 year olds. People who support gay rights are guilty of being hateful and bashing on Christians, when Christians do NOT hate anybody. Ya, there are a few bad apples that claim to represent Christianity that will take their opinions way too far, but that's about every 1 out of 100,000, which is very little.

I don't think we are 'hating' on Chick-fil-a as you say. It is a simple fact that the company gives a lot of money to groups that fight for segregation and unequal rights. The point of the article is that if you support gay rights, then you shouldnt spend money at their business. In America, you vote with your dollars, and almost everyone reading this article will do that and not shop at Chick-fil-a. BTW, Im an athiest and Christians can say whatever you want. I feel sorry that you people are so deluded to believe in magical beings.

I agree with Sheila. This and any business have a right to donate to wherever they choose don't we live in a free world where we have freedom to choose where we donate out money??? How many companies donate money to gay rights groups? I'm a christian and I have my beliefs but I'm not going to Bash you if you tell me you donate to gay rights. Why is it that 'Christians' are labeled as haters. I'm so tired of hearing it. I don't hate anyone! Gay or not gay. I think that all you people who have such hateful things to say have a problem. It not a 'Christian' thing. I'm finding that many gays are so hateful to us also. So why make such and issue against Christians? in my opinion people are people who all deserve love an respect no matter your sexual orientation. If anyone would read the bible you would see that Jesus loved everyone! He was ridiculed for gaming out with the 'wrong' people and his reply was to love EVERYoNE! We should learn from that example and stop hating eachother!

while they have the right to give money to whom they choose, they are engaging in the same activity that sheila is accusing the gays of engaging. This is America. People shouldn't have to fight this hard for equality. Slavery shouldn't have required a war to end that practice. If there are haters, its people who try to stop others from being treated like humans. Shame on you chick-fil-A, for your antigay stance and your weak wordplay.
