Andre Bauer Dodges the Pink Elephant

Weeks after blogger Mike Rogers outed conservative South Carolina lieutenant governor Andre Bauer, the story has all but died. Did pinning the rumors on the disgraced Gov. Mark Sanford really work?

In some parts of the country, any issue involving “gay” is not something to be discussed among polite company. Take, for instance, the recent gay rumors involving South Carolina’s right-wing lieutenant governor, Andre Bauer. Ever since a mini scandal erupted this summer over the 40-year-old bachelor’s love life, Bauer and most of the South Carolina press have gone silent.

The sordid story involving Bauer all began when South Carolina’s GOP governor Mark Sanford made national headlines in June after mysteriously disappearing for almost a week. The truth soon came out regarding his whereabouts -- the married Sanford was canoodling with his self-described “soul mate” (a.k.a. mistress) in Argentina.

Pressure mounted on Sanford to step down. To encourage Sanford’s resignation, Lieutenant Governor Bauer -- who supported Mike Huckabee in the 2008 presidential election -- offered to forgo running for governor in 2010 so that he could take over for Sanford and focus on governing instead of future elections and campaigns.

But Sanford refused to resign.

Things got infinitely more complicated on August 31 when Mike Rogers, a blogger who outs antigay politicians, reported that Bauer was a closet case.

“So, what is the deal with Bauer?” wrote Rogers. “I have confirmed and spoken to four individuals who I have no doubt are telling me the truth. These men have been hit on by Bauer, with one of them telling me it happened at least five times since Bauer's election in 2003. Then another call came in and I met with the source while he was visiting D.C. recently. ‘He's gay,’ the source told me. ‘How do you know?’ I asked. ‘Because I've had sex with him on two separate occasions.’”

Well, I’d love to make a big deal about the sexuality of public officials who refuse to support the rights of GLBT people. While, for the most part, I do not suffer from overt discrimination on an everyday basis, being denied the right to marry and have it universally recognized is really a hardship for so many of us. Also, this slanderous talk of an alleged “gay agenda” is completely unacceptable.

I love the comments from Jake Knotts, "there ain't a homosexual bone in his body" (I am stopping myself from joking about that one) and "he's a good boy". I guess that means that all of us dirty homosexuals are bad. Actually I have been known to call someone a "good boy" on occaision, however at the time they were being very naughty, LOL The funny thing is that he goes on to say that he is always with a pretty girl, well hell so am I, all of my female friends are very pretty, that doesn't mean I'm banging them.

When compared to Sanford, maybe voters in the state simply don't care. Maybe "gay" looks positively wholesome.

Yes, it is an open secret that he is gay. In SC, we don't care so much about that, contrary to what some people might thing. It only becomes a problem if he is sleeping with black guys, or married men, then people will get worked up over it. Pictures are a problem too. The idea is one thing. Living color proof is another thing. As long as Andre or Senator Lindsay Graham stay on the down low, all is ok.

OK, I don't get it. We have a blogger who specializes in outing anti-gay politicians, who relies on unnamed sources who claim to have been hit on or to have had sex with Mr. Brauer. Although I don't give a rat's behind if the lieutenant governor is gay or not, I do not think we can rely on the blogger as a reliable source. I have seen nothing to convince me that Mr. Brauer is gay. I would love to see an openly gay man be lieutenant governor of South Carolina, but think that this story is unsupported and ludicrous.

i live one county away in Mecklenburg/Charlotte, and take my word for it, SC has ALWAYS had a reputation as the poor relation. You know that expression they use "Thank God for Mississippi", meaning SC would be on the bottom of all listings and rankings were it not for MS. Both of these lying sons-of-bitches need to go, but for different reasons. And what about that US Senator Graham?
