Signs of Faith, "God Hates Hate"

Many have argued people should ignore the members of Westboro Baptist Church because "they are fringe." But Rabbi Sharon Kleinbaum says the hate that fuels those "fringe" people can lead to murder.

"God hates fags." "God hates Jews." These signs and others like them were held up by a group picketing my synagogue on Sunday morning.

In response my congregation held a nonviolent, peaceful prayer vigil. Our signs read, "We are ALL created in God's image". We prayed. We sang. We asked people to pledge money for every minute that these messengers of hate were at our doorstop. We raised $10,000.

Many had argued that we should ignore the members of Westboro Baptist Church who picketed us today: "They are fringe." "They don't represent a large group." "They don't speak for Christianity." "They should not be given the benefit of any attention at all."

I believe we cannot afford to ignore them.

Dr. George Tiller and Officer Stephen Tyrone Jones, the security guard at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, were both killed by men who professed "fringe" ideology. Other members of the same "fringe" groups try to distance themselves from those heinous acts of murder: "We didn't mean for our words t o convince anyone to murder, our words were simply an expression of our beliefs," they claim.

The line that divides rhetoric and words of action is too easily blurred, especially in times like these, when more states stand poised to recognize the right of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender citizens to marry, and the president of the United States supports an end to unjust laws like "don't ask, don't tell" and the Defense of Marriage Act and will sign hate-crimes and nondiscrimination legislation for the gay community. Perhaps it is because of this emerging societal shift that those who sit on the fringe have been pushed to seek retribution through violence.

To Christine, did we just read the same article? The Rabbi clearly discusses an incident where another Jewish woman, based on the teachings of her Rabbi, plotted and threatened to kill her because she taught tolerance toward gays and lesbians. I see nothing where she was explicitly anti-Christian and pro-Jew. I do see where she explicitly states that the "ignore them and they'll go away" method doesn't work with groups like Westboro Baptist Church--that would be the "God Hates Fags" church that picketed Matthew Shepard's funeral, among many, many others. How any part of this article or statement leads to the conclusion that she is a Christian-hating anything escapes me entirely. I'll take "Missing the Point" for $500, Bob.

God does not hate anyone. God is love and there is no hate in love. These people that say God hates something have become God themselves or created their gold self righteous calf. Shame on them. I hate the fact that I am a sinner (my nature). I fight all I can with self control so I do not become like a dog humping at every corner where are good looking guy sees me. Self control Self Control Self control... discipline...God like people... loving people...Not being selfish...that is what God wants. Do not be promiscuous (and that goes to heterosexual as well), respect one another as you would like to be respected and loved, do not use others as a piece of meat. I think that is what the church has been trying to teach all along and we thing they teach that sex is bad. They do not. Sex is good but with responsibility, self respect/love and respect and love for others.

Bottom line for "hardcore Christians" in the bible it CLEARLY states thou shalt not judge thy neighbor. If they are going to follow the bible to a T then they should follow ALL of it. God is the only one to make a judgment NOT them. Whatever their beliefs are they should keep to themselves because they are going against the bible to do so...plus if they are going to follow/preach the bible then the same people cannot overeat, have sex before marriage, talk back to their parents, or swear. It's funny how these "hardcore Christians" pick and choose what they preach about!

CK From Denver. If you think homosexuals have more hate than religion...let's do a body count. Hmm...what would you say? 30 million dead because of religion? Much much more I'm sure. By the way, what is the name of the last concentration camp that was ran by homosexuals? Ohh...wait...it was homo's and jews that were thrown in those. How typical of the Christian Rite to completely neglect history.

Who are we to throw stones. Jesus made a man see a different point of view maybe rather then plain sight. He was the original liberal evolving his own Jews to pray to god directly as everyone is god's son's & daughters individually as opposed to believe just to be accepted by fellow man. But he still stood his ground as his people stabbed him in the back in fear to save their own asses. Regardless, believe in yourself even though everyone walks on water when it rains. The King James version of the Bible was written by false prophet's ideas of what they think God's word is & used it to govern people like shepherds to a herd. Where do slaves get gold to build a Golden Cow? The Egyptians took care of their slaves & I'd be pissed if someone stole my money too. The Jews caused a lot of trouble for themselves by calling themselves God's chosen people. But I don't judge as that is Jesus' job in the end & until then it is just common sense to follow the golden rules.

I would like to point out that in the new testament of the King James version of the Bible Jesus makes no reference to homosexuality at all. This all comes about in after his dissension into heaven. I don't believe that these people are true Christians of faith. Everyone is different and God made us to be different. I also believe that God gave everyone a talent and the person must find that talent. How they use it is up to them. Some for Good some for evil. I am an artist and use my talent to make people happy. I have no desire to make a lot of money for my work. I give most of it as gifts to people if they wish to make a donation fine. I do agree that these protesters are very dangerous and I also believe it will be their undoing as more churches except and welcome gays to their churches. Tolerance is the best tool against these so called Christians.

Could it be that Rabbi Sharon Kleinbaum is both a christian hating feminist and a christian hating jew? Speaking of hate, is the public just following the lead of another activist jew in their anti-christian cause... It seems that hate must be protested and criminalized, except for hate within the jewish community, jewish activists, jewish protestors, jewish prejudices, etc. Is what we are really saying...the world can only look at hate from the perspective of jews.... and any attention or examination upon the jew or the rabbi is hate and any attention projected out of the jewish community isnt hate...but protesting hate... I wouldnt say that Baptists are hate mongers....any more than jews are hate mongers....how many christians protest orthodox jews? Yet, how many jews protest christians? Yup that about sums it up

Andrew W., I really don't think your prejudice is any more helpful than the anti-LGBT prejudice aimed at us. Since its founding, the Cathedral of Hope has rejected the notion that homosexuality is wrong. They're now part of the UCC, which also rejects that discriminatory view. On the Cathedral of Hope website is a publication called Homosexuality and Christianity, which argues that the Bible doesn't say homosexuality is wrong. The beliefs we need to fight are anti-LGBT beliefs, religious or not. Here are three examples of nonreligious anti-LGBT beliefs: there is no homosexuality in nature, the structure of the sex organs implies that homosexuality is unnatural, and transgender people keep changing their minds about their gender identity. These beliefs are used to deny us our rights. Finally, since being gay isn't wrong, saying religion makes it wrong doesn't make sense to me. In my view, antireligious anti-LGBT prejudice is as unjust as other anti-LGBT prejudice.
