McCain's Top Strategist Addresses Log Cabin Republicans

Senior McCain campaign strategist Steve Schmidt spoke to Log Cabin Republicans, calling them "an important part" of the Republican Party and sounding a personal note about his lesbian sister.

In what represents a marked shift from the Republican campaign rhetoric of 2004 -- where some George W. Bush advisors stoked anti-gay sentiment in an attempt to drive social conservatives to the polls -- Steve Schmidt, senior campaign strategist for the McCain campaign, stopped by a Log Cabin Republican luncheon Thursday to welcome the group to the convention.

“I just wanted to take a second to come by and pay my respect and the campaign’s respect to your organization and to your group,” said Schmidt, who many view as the new architect of the Republican Party. “Your organization is an important one in the fabric of our party.”

In his brief remarks, Schmidt weaved in a personal anecdote about his lesbian sister and her relationship to him, his wife, and his children. “On a personal level, my sister and her partner are an important part of my life and our children’s life,” he said. “I admire your group and your organization and I encourage you to keep fighting for what you believe in because the day is going to come.”

This convention marks the first in history that Log Cabin Republicans, an LGBT rights organization, have been fully credentialed official guests of the GOP host committee, and Schmidt is not the only high-profile party figure to address the group. Sen. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania, RNC treasurer Tim Morgan, and McCain political director Mike DuHaime – the first hire made by Schmidt after he took the helm in July – have all spoken at Log Cabin events this week.

That Republican Party leaders are reaching out to Log Cabin members is another sign that neither side of this pitched battle for the presidency wants to concede a single vote. Michelle Obama, after stumping at the LGBT delegate luncheon during the Democratic convention last week, spoke just last night to about 300 donors at an LGBT reception in Los Angeles.

For his part, Schmidt didn’t miss the opportunity to throw a few zingers at Democrats using the backdrop of vice presidential nominee Gov. Sarah Palin’s well regarded acceptance speech Wednesday night.

“You saw one of the great speeches in the history of political conventions last night by an accomplished governor of a state who has just announced herself as a major force in the Republican Party in her own right, and I think the other side this morning, when you consider the backlash that is likely to occur after all the vile filth that’s been thrown at her, they ought to be sitting on the other side saying, Oh -- My -- God,” Schmidt said to the cheers of some 50 attendees. “I’ve been in some tough political fights in my career, and I will just tell you that over the last 48 hours, the smearing and the defamation of this family is unlike anything I have ever seen.”

Republicans have responded to news reports of Gov. Palin’s family life, such as her pregnant 17-year-old daughter, with awe and indignation. To the extent that personal details of Gov. Palin’s family life continue to make headlines and swing voters begin taking sides, some Republicans see that as a net plus in the election.

“The more CNN and The New York Times keep beating up on her, the better,” said one Log Cabin Republican who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

I am tired of Hollywood and tired of ignorant voters who vote for the more glamorous or hip candidate. That kind of voting is what is ignorant. I do NOT trust Obama to protect our country, when we are attacked again, and we will be, don't fool yourself. John McCain is a TRUE American who loves this country, while Barack accepts campaign donations from an American Terrorist and claims to love this country. For me, there is NO question who to vote for. So don't speak to me and tell me I have some obligation because I am gay to vote Democrat! cont.'...

From Kris cont.'... As for my rights as a gay individual, I will continue to voice my opinion to my representative and push for gay rights any chance I get, but I am not stupid enough to think that Barack Obama or the Clintons cares about my rights as a gay individual. They have their own agenda; they want as many votes as they can get; therefore, they appear to sympathize with all minorities to gain power. Barack stating that "people cling to their religion and guns in hard times." That says ALOT to me. As if he thinks that is somehow wrong or ignorant of people to do. Why is it bad that I cling to my religion in hard times? Why is it wrong that I have a gun to protect my family, when our house was broken into in the middle of the night, one year ago, with my small children asleep in their beds. It is my RIGHT to protect my family from an intruder, and yet people like Rosie O'Donnell want to take that right away? She does not speak for me. cont.'...

From Kris cont.'... I am tired of people crying on my behalf because I am either a woman or I am gay that we are somehow discriminated against to the extreme that you portray. Can things be even better for women and gays, yes, but I am not willing to hand over half my hard earned paycheck to Barack Obama for him to distribute as he sees fit, just so he can pass a law that says I can get married. I work hard, and I have a family to support. I will contribute to the needy as I see fit, not have the government do it for me. cont'...

Deb, I think your comment, "Any gay person voting for the Republicans would set themselves back 100 years." is to say the least, idiotic. We as gays are able to be more open and our society is way more accepting than 100 years ago. My kids have the same rights as heterosexual kids do today, and I have arranged it so that legally my partner has the right to make medical decisions on my behalf. None of this would have been the feasible 100 years ago, and it is a HUGE stretch on your part to say that the Republican Party intends to take all that away or even can. cont.'...

Steve Schmidt said that he "just wanted to take a second . . ." to drop by and pat the LCR on their cute little heads. That's all the time they are worth to him and the rest of McPain's toadies. He also said to keep fighting for what you believe in because "the day is going to come." The generation that will see the dawn of that day has yet to be born if there is not a major shift of poer in D. C. very soon.

Leopards don't change their spots. The Republicans HATE us; pure and simpe. This meeting was nothing more than a sop the the Log Cabin dreamers who still blindly maintain the belief that Republicans aren't REALLY anti-gay... GROW UP!!! The meeting was just an attempt to keep more LGBT people from voting for Obama. The Republicans are TERRIFIED of losing this election! If McCain is elected, just see how quickly Republican 'support' for the Log Cabin boys vanishes.

"An all out smear campaign against Palin" Please!! The right wing media and Faux News have vilified Barack Obama. They have called him a terrorist, a Muslim (although I've never understood what is wrong with being a Muslim) they have accused he and his wife of being elitist and some members of the media and the GOP have called Michelle and Barack "Uppity" which is so mean spirited, offensive and deeply racist. Faux News constantly refers to him as Osama and they accused him of using his children when he and his kids appeared on Access Hollywood. Sarah Palin has pimped out her kids ever since she got the nomination but that's different. She's just showing what a lovely mother she is. It's hypocritical Bullshit! Palin's record on gay rights is dreadful. Both she and Grandpa McCain have both said yes to a constitutional ban on same sex marriage. Obama and Biden are 100% against a ban. You Log Cabin gays need to search for your soul.

This all out smear of Sarah Palin is really sad. Now the Dems want to paint Palin as rabidly anti-gay because of the teachings of her church (her church apparently believes gays can be "saved"), but Obama himself has a history with wacky church teachings, and has befriended several bigots in the "ex-gay" movement (Donnie McClurkin). And the fact that Sarah Palin used her first veto as Gov. to veto a bill that would have denied benefits to same-sex couples, shows that she's not radidly anti-gay. And for the first time the McCain camp actually sent it's top advisor to meet with a gay Republican group. We in the gay community have to wake up a realize that we cannot put our eggs all in one basket. We must court leaders on both the Democratic and Republican sides to help up fight for equality. And I commend the McCain campaign for making a first step in the right direction.

Anyone need any additional proof that Sarah palin is no friend of the GLBT community read this. Palin church promotes converting gays By RACHEL D'ORO Associated Press Writer Gov. Sarah Palin's church is promoting a conference that promises to convert gays into heterosexuals through the power of prayer. "You'll be encouraged by the power of God's love and His desire to transform the lives of those impacted by homosexuality," according to the insert in the bulletin of the Wasilla Bible Church, where Palin has prayed for about six years.
