Obama to Launch Faith Tour That Includes Supporter of Prop. 8

Sen. Barack Obama's campaign is reportedly launching a "Faith, Family, and Values Tour" next week that will include Catholic legal scholar Douglas Kmiec as one of the campaign's surrogates. Kmiec wrote an op-ed for the San Francisco Chronicle this summer in which he urged support for passing California's marriage ban, Proposition 8.

The Christian Broadcasting Network is reporting that the Obama campaign next week will kick off “Barack Obama: Faith, Family, and Values Tour,” designed to woo the votes of left-leaning Catholics, progressive Evangelicals, and some conservative mainline Protestants. If LGBT people find the tour eerily reminiscent of the South Carolina gospel tour the campaign arranged last year with antigay "ex-gay" gospel singer Donnie McClurkin, their instincts may not be far off.

CBN names Catholic legal scholar Douglas Kmiec as one of the religious surrogates who will hit the road stumping for Obama. Kmiec wrote a June 13 op-ed for the San Francisco Chronicle supporting California's Proposition 8, the ballot measure to ban same-sex marriage, titled "On Same-Sex Marriage: Should California Amend Its Constitution? Say 'No' to the Brave New World." Kmiec's first two sentences in the piece read, "The California ballot initiative intended to set aside the state supreme court's judicial invention of same-sex marriage deserves public support. Maybe it is enough to say, as many do in conversation, that it merely re-secures a millennia of tradition and common sense."

In the op-ed, Kmiec says the state supreme court ignored the separation of church and state in its ruling and argues that allowing gay marriage serves to separate the institution of marriage from procreation.

He concludes his op-ed: "When carefully assessed, the acquisition of unnatural reproductive means often advances the interests of the very affluent through a libertarian exercise that would threaten all hope of democratic equality. In a depopulating world, the claim that there is a universal right to marry regardless of gender becomes a frightening ally of a claimed universal right to access to genetically engineered children. People should reject this claim by returning traditional marriage to its rightful place."

Kmiec's views run counter to those of Obama, who voiced his opposition to Proposition 8 in a letter addressed to San Francisco's Alice B. Toklas LGBT Democratic Club. "I oppose the divisive and discriminatory efforts to amend the California constitution, and similar efforts to amend the U.S. Constitution or those of other states," the Illinois senator wrote.

Contacted by The Advocate for comment, Obama campaign spokesperson Shin Inouye confirmed CBN's report, reiterated Obama's support for LGBT rights, and echoed the theme of diversity that Obama often trumpets himself.

JUST ONE LITTLE MINUTE HERE! Speak for yourself when you start talking about Uncle Tom and riding at the back of the bus. Missy, I sit anywhere I choose when I ride a bus. The day I can't is the day I hold a fund raiser to buy the damn thing! And just remember, the guy to be worried about is the guy who charges people with being "Uncle Tom," not the target of his remarks.

"The most pro gay-rights nominee in history"???!!! Yeah, that would be Hillary Clinton. She is the only candidate that actually marched in pride parades and actively worked to increase the rights of the lgbt community. She did not pander to evangelicals and Catholics like Obama is disgracefully doing. How can he get away with saying he is tolerant while actively employing people who are bigots and hateful? Enough is enough. Obama is not a friend of ours, this is the last straw.

Their difference on LGBT issues isn't "tremendous" at all. They both believe that marriage is between a man & a woman, but Obama added "and God" when he spoke at the Saddleback forum. Both believe the states should decide on all issues affecting us. Obama is the one who prays with rabid homophobics such as Rev. Meeks (who hosts Hell Houses at Halloween depicting LGBT people burning in hell). Obama wants both queers and those who hate us to consider him in their corner. He's in no one's corner. He's an opportunist who only cares about himself. I can't fathom why anyone supports him, much less LGBT people. I'm voting for Cynthia McKinney, however ineffectual that is. At least I like her.

If Obama is really so concerned about showing tolerence - which is the reason Obama uses for haveing anti-gay bigots shilling for him on his Faith Tours- then why is it that he only has gay hating bigots on his tolerence team? Why doesn't Obama ever invite some KKK members to the party? It's all about diversity, right?

For all of you who are upset, like me, that there is no candidate willing to defend equality for gay Americans, I strongly urge you NOT to sit this election out. Please let your voice be heard and vote for a third party. The Green Party and some independent candidates firmly stand to support us. Let's show the Dems and Reps that we are a large voting block that needs to FINALLY be recognized!

This is one homo who does not love Obama. He absolutely scares me. He favors the death penalty, even for people who have not committed murder. Surely if one is African American, one might find this a little terrifying, since most people executed in this country are black men. Why would anybody vote for him? He will say and do anything. He doesn't know what he believes about immigration. He is now for off-shore drilling and nuclear power.

Frankly, I don't care who he brings with him to get the votes he needs to win. He isn't anti-gay, but he needs to appeal a little to the right for the votes. He is STILL the most gay friendly person who has ever run for president and he gets my vote.

    B. CLINTON STABBED US IN THE BACK WITH DADT AND THE FEDERAL DOMA. HOPEFULLY OBAMA WILL MAKE GOOD ON HIS PROMISE TO ELIMINATE BOTH BECAUSE MANY LIKE ME VOTED FOR HIM IN THE DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY BECAUSE H. CLINTON PLEDGED TO ONLY PARTIALLY ELIMINATE THE DOMA. RELIGIOS DOGMA HAS NO PLACE IN PUBLIC POLICY MAKING. J. BIDEN ADMITTED THIS WHEN HE EXPLAINED HIS PRO CHOICE POSITION WHILE ACCEPTING CATHOLIC DOGMA. WE ARE A SECULAR GOVERNMENT WITH COMPLETE SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE. THIS WAS THE FOUNDING FATHERS GREAT GIFT TO THE WORLD. RELIGION IS THE BIGGEST THREAT TO WORLD CIVILIZATION. CHRISTIANITY, JUDAISM AND ISLAM ALL STARTED AS IN-GROUP MORALITY TRIBAL CULTS. HISTORICALLY THERE IS NOTHING UNIVERSAL OR SYMETRICAL ABOUT THEIR MORALITY. OBAMA SHOULD STUDY SAM HARRIS' "LETTER TO A CHRISTIAN NATION". I REALIZE THAT ALMOST ALL POLITICIANS PANDER TO RELIGIOUS BIGOTS AND THAT OBAMA IS SUPREMELY BETTER THAN MCCAIN.

I'm a former HIllary supporter too, but she lost.....get over it! Remember what voting for Ralph Nader did in 2000...got us 8 years of GWB. Do we ever learn from our mistakes?? John McCain has been wrong on just about every issue of importance today. He consistently supported this horrible war that is helping to bankrupt our country, is anti-abortion pledging to appoint Supreme Court justices who oppose Roe v Wade and he supports Prop 8 in California as well as all other anti gay intiatives that are on ballots across the country. He has voted with Bush over 90% of the time, hardly a 'maverick' in my book. Barak Obama isn't our salvation, but he at least opposes all of the anti-gay legislation currently pending, has vowed to appoint people to the Court who are progressive in spirit and promises to end the war in 16 months. A vote for McCain is a vote for the same.

That's it, I'm voting for Nader. If the most pro-gay rights nominee in history isn't willing to categorically state that if you are not in favor of gay marriage, then he doesn't want your vote than how can be expected to lead. Who cares if McCain will be able to appoint 1 or 2 Supreme Court Justices to replace retiring liberals, or if the economy collapses, or he to war with Iran, or the sea levels rise 8 inches in the next 20 years. How can people not see that the most important issue facing LGBT Americans is whether Obama loudly dissociates himself from anyone who whose views on gay rights aren't as progressive as Sen. Obama's?
