Officer and a Gentleman

He may be a casualty of  "don't ask, don't tell," but as a magnetic LGBT activist, Dan Choi's future has never looked brighter.

When Lt. Dan Choi was approached by a producer for MSNBC's The Rachel Maddow Show in March, he wasn't exactly keen on becoming the newest face of "don't ask, don't tell," the U.S. military's long-standing ban on openly gay service members. The 28-year-old Iraq War veteran and Arabic language specialist had just cofounded Knights Out, an organization of gay students and alumni from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point dedicated to ending the Pentagon's antigay policy, and Maddow wanted to do a segment on the group. "I was like, 'No, I don't really want to, I think somebody else should do it,'" he recalls, and suggested retired vets instead.

His reluctance was understandable: Going on air would make his role in Knights Out widely known and likely result in his discharge from the Army, which had been his life since age 18. But the producer was incredibly persuasive, and, as Choi jokes, "Military folks are used to doing what they're told."

The outcome was at once predictable and unexpected. The Army notified Choi of his discharge proceedings nearly two months after the segment aired in March, and his nervy on-air plea to hold onto his job helped make him one of the newest and most powerful voices in the LGBT rights movement. He's since spoken out in television appearances and rallies on a range of issues, from gays in the military to marriage equality, during a season of major victories in Iowa, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine -- and a painful setback in California. He's also campaigning for Anthony Woods, a West Point classmate who was similarly discharged under the ban. Woods is running for the California congressional seat to be vacated by Rep. Ellen Tauscher, now an appointee for a State Department post.

Republicans vs Democrats and Bill Clinton: 1992-1995 DOMA and Don't Ask Don't Tell didn't happen at the same time. Don't Ask, Don't Tell was Bill Clinton's compromise after promising during his campaign to repeal the automatic expulsion of gays and lesbians from the military. Like a some things he promised, it was ill thought out and he was unable to deliver on it. This was a major disappointment to gay activists. DOMA happened around the time the Republicans gained majority seats in both houses in 1994. The Republicans and the electorate created an atmosphere where gay marriage was considered divisive and offensive to the "average American". The Democrats screwed up because they lacked the integrity to stand up and back gay marriage. Flash forward to 2009, and the NY Times says gay marriage is becoming a non issue among conservatives. When Repubs. have set the agendas for the past 14 years it's annoying when they can't admit they were/ are wrong about a lot of things.

One wants to honor and respect our military. Truly. Then the military goes and does a dumbass thing like discharging a dynamic and first-rate soldier, and you have to rethink the whole honor and respect dealie. I understand that a law "compelled" this action, but that doesn't rescue it from being shameful, stupid and, ultimately, against our nation's best interests. This idiocy cannot be placed at our (women's) door: white, homophobic, ignorant, fearful, cowardly aging men. What, in fact, do they fear? Their "fears" say more about them than they do about the military people who fall prey to this profound ignorance. Lt. Choi is clearly overqualified for his tasks in the military: he has a great future. Now he can reach out and take it.

All true comments. Now, consider it YOUR job to convince the Republicans in congress to co-author Congressman Patrick Murphy's repeal of the DADT bill. Good luck! On a separate note, Dan Choi is a personal friend of mine and I couldn't be prouder of him and his relentless efforts!

Who signed Don't Ask Don't Tell into law, anyway? George W. Bush? Some other Republican? No, it was Democrat Bill Clinton. You can't say he was forced into it by a GOP legislature because the GOP would not regain a majority in congress until almost two years AFTER DADT was made law. DADT happened on the Democrats' watch yet Democrats get a free pass and the continued unquestioning dedication of GLBT people.

It is frightening to think that the US army has more in common with the Taliban in Afghanistan than with its military allies like Britain, Australia and the Europeans. The Islamists are homophobic as is the US military. We all know who is supplying the deadly components of the IEDs that kill and maim soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan, the homophobic Islamic Republic of Iran. One of the main policies of the Taliban is to spread homophobia.

A terrific article on Lt. Choi. I hope he finds success and happiness in what ever endevor he pursues. Although I'm not a big fan on repealing DADT, because who would want to fight in wars base on lies and oil?

Lt. Choi is indeed an articulate and persuasive representative for our community. I'd certainly rather the public see Choi speaking for us than Perez Hilton.
