Sex-Ed Student Turns Teen Activist

When sex education classes at Danny Sparks's high school failed to address the issues important to him, he took matters into his own hands ... and became an activist in the process.

Compared to most high school students, you could say that 16-year-old Danny Sparks is at the top of his class when it comes to civic responsibility and community activism.

Sparks had already been confronted with the lack of access to resources for Cleveland's LGBT population — especially for youths — when he came out at 14. When he took the mandatory health class at Parma Senior High School, in a Cleveland suburb, he was dismayed to find that his school district had a policy of teaching abstinence only and that the class had a traditional marriage focus. Sparks says he remembers thinking, There’s absolutely nothing in this for me — why am I even here?

"They're excluding gay students in the curriculum, but it's also universal in the fact that the information they're providing to their straight students isn't good either," Sparks tells The Advocate.

When a meeting with a school counselor and assistant principal failed to bring action, Sparks sought the support of the AIDS Taskforce of Greater Cleveland, which was already working on the issue. He and several others went to the Parma school board, sending out nine letters only to receive one response directing them to the deputy superintendent. Getting a response from her proved difficult — she “lost” a letter and failed to reply to e-mails and phone calls until finally responding, “At this time we’re not changing our curriculum,” blaming budget issues.

When school resumed the following year, so did the frustrating process of being forwarded from one official to another. Finally, the director of academic services agreed to a meeting, but only to repeat the abstinence-only policy of the board.

This time Sparks and friends blasted the board and deputy superintendent with a packet of letters from supportive students. Sparks attended a board meeting to address members regarding both the absence of comprehensive sex education and what he saw as the shocking lack of responsibility. The superintendent again referred the group to the deputy superintendent, who in turn set up yet another meeting at which the board claimed that parents wanted abstinence-only sex education.

“Since no parents are speaking out, they don’t really see it as an issue,” says Sparks, who is now working with others to educate and involve parents in the area.

If you teach about gay sex in the schools, then, obviously, the teen boys will be banging each other in the hallways! It's the same as when schools teach about straight sex and offer condoms ... the kids go out of control! :> Just kiddin!

When ever I hear someone talking about waiting until marriage before having sex I shudder! Assuming that everybody will marry and marry at a relatively young age is asinine. So under the "abstinence only" edict all unmarried persons have to remain virgins for life and all divorced people will have to remain celibate...too ridiculous for words! Or if this edict only applies to teenagers, when are they allowed to break their vow? @Dr. Jallen Rix I enjoyed your article on Asburn but I am amazed so few readers seemed to understand the point (I think) you made quite clear.

Good for you Danny, and others who stand up for doing the right thing when it comes to educating themselves about sexuality. You are not alone. As a sexologist who deals with people coming out of the ex-gay world, I know first hand it is still not easy to be healthy and without shame regarding sexuality. Keep asking for what you need and it will come to you.

The sad thing is that the same teaching means that at least 3 in evry 100 children are the result of abstinance only teaching leading students to know nothing about prevention or safe sex. Does the school board not realize that since the inclusion of abstinance only teaching, diseases like Syphillis, Gonoreah and Clamidia are making a comeback. Syphillis and Gonoreah were almost wiped out in North America before this. Because of this policy young girls don't realize that they can get AIDS or Syphillis which are diseases they will pass on their unborn children. I say congradulations to the young man for realizing that this policy affects more than young gay people but their str8 peers as well. These students should start boycotting the classes based on fundamentalism as being detrimental to their health and welfare, they are the ones who are going to pay for the ignorance of their elders.

Bravo Danny! Having a good understanding of facts to make your own decisions is always better than being kept in the dark, no matter what your opinion on sex is. I may be an old-fashioned type that wants to wait until marriage for sentimental reasons, but I'm damn glad I learned comprehensive sex-ed and I would never want to deny anyone access to that valuable information. How are we supposed to stop the spread of HIV if a young girl thinks 'only gay guys get it' and doesn't use protection, or any kid unaware that their actions might have consequences? Students that learn abstinence-only only wait about six months longer to have sex than their peers, but they're a hell of a lot more likely to wind up with an unexpected pregnancy when they do have sex. And even if you're not having sex, it's a good idea to understand your own body instead of being mystified by it.

He wants the school to indoctrinate all the children and teach them about fisting and other perversions.

I am so glad that Danny Sparks is doing this. I know the Grandview, Wash. school district follows the same "abstinence only" policies, and I suspect that many other school districts do too. A group of fundamentalists had a presentation on what they are teaching at local schools. They do not teach about birth control options at all. There is no recognition of the looming population explosion (earth's population doubles every 30 years, and it is projected to be 14 billion from the current 7 billion in the year 2040.) In the lifetimes of our grandchildren, there will be 28 billion people on planet earth, and yet there are no measures to counter this except, "Say no." Where will the jobs come from? The added resources? The abstinence-only program is not effective and unrealistic, even by the federal GAO. The average age for marriage is now 29, and these people expect abstinence until then. Wow! This is an evil and insane policy, and no one is doing anything about it!

The parents in this community need to get their heads out of the sand. Their kids are having sex if they want to believe it or not!
