GOP Holds Big Leads in Va.

Ken Cuccinelli X390 (FAIR USE PUBLICITY) | ADVOCATE.COM

Virginia may have gone blue for President Barack Obama in the 2008 election, but polls indicate that Republicans could be on track to sweep statewide offices on Election Day this Tuesday. The likely winners include attorney general candidate Ken Cuccinelli (pictured), who raised alarm with his antigay comments last week.

The other statewide GOP candidates are gubernatorial contender Bob McDonnell and Bill Bolling, who seeks reelection as lieutenant governor. Collectively, Cuccinelli referred to the trio as “McBollinelli” while he waved a broom at a rally on Sunday, according to Richmond-based WTVR-TV.

“All three members of the GOP statewide team -- Bob McDonnell, Bill Bolling, and Cuccinelli -- hold double-digit leads in the polls over their Democratic counterparts,” reported WTVR-TV.

Last week Cuccinelli came under fire, including a denouncement in The Washington Post, for his comments to a Norfolk-based newspaper that “homosexual acts” are “intrinsically wrong.”

Earlier in the campaign, McDonnell, the current state attorney general, was lambasted for his 1989 graduate thesis in which he wrote that the government should “restrain, punish, and deter” homosexuality in the interest of conservative family values.

My partner and I fled VA. and their extreme homophobia in 2003 after they passed some of the most draconian anti-gay laws. Several years later the Washington Post finally got around to running article about GLBT people leaving Northern VA for D.C. and MD. It sucks that we are second class citizens with so few rights in so few states. Virginia is most certainly not for lovers!

Virginia should change its slogan from, "Virginia is for lovers," to "Virginia is for haters."
