Gay-Friendly Dayton Mayor Unseated

Rhine McLinx180 (CityofDayton.org) | Advocate.com

Some members of the political community in Dayton, Ohio, suggest that the electoral defeat suffered by incumbent mayor Rhine McLin on Tuesday can be attributed to her support for the city’s gay rights ordinance.

As a result of her support for the ordinance, McLin, a Democrat in her second term, lost the backing of the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance, a group of predominantly African-American ministers, according to the Dayton Daily News.

“Mayor Rhine McLin lost the endorsement of a group of predominantly black ministers in large part because of her support for the city’s gay-rights ordinance,” the Dayton Daily News reported. “She was chastised for taking a stand for human rights, in other words, by a group of ministers who spent much of their lives fighting for it.”

The IMA endorsed newcomer Gary Leitzell instead. Leitzell defeated McLin in a close race on Tuesday.

The president of the alliance, the Reverend Wilburt Shanklin, indicated that the gay rights ordinance was a factor in their endorsement. “'We thought we had an agreement’ that she wouldn’t support a gay rights ordinance,” said Shanklin, according to the Dayton Daily News.

The IMA did NOT endorse me. They remained neutral and asked their ministers to tell their respective congregations to vote the way that they felt they should vote. I actually thanked them for this decision. It was the right one in my opinion. I asked most groups to remain neutral. Most did. Some did not.

ArtNOLA, nothing can excuse you calling someone the N word. Bigotry can exist on all sides, and to even consider this shows you have some serious race issues. It makes you no better than the ministers in this article. As a queer person of color, the comments I've been reading on articles involving black people has been discouraging. It makes me wonder about my place in OUR community if some queer whites can so readily dismiss an entire race.

One more reason to remove churchs from the list of organization that are free of being on the tax rolls. Could someone explain why this could not be defined as government directly or indirectly supporting a church ("The Christian Church") which is supposed to be against our Constitution? Put all religious property on the tax rolls and watch our deficit vanish. Today religion is a multi-billion dollar business that SHOULD BE TAXED! Look at the "temples to money" that the evangelical pastors build all over the country!

I at the point that if this kind of $hit keeps coming up with black leaders, I may start using the N word and I have never used that in my life.

That so many blacks oppose gays should be the clarion call that conservative religion is the hellfire of the earth, right here. Positive proof that conservative religion is a terrible lie, filled with hatred and ignorance. Most of this in the black community feeds from male inferiority complex going way back to when black men were called "boy", and hanged for even whistling at a white woman. And for the black women, the issue is the black male community is in many ways destroyed, thanks to the so called values voters " eg the southern white baptists, who backed slavery and recreated it in segregation. And the result is that so many black women - in general much more educated then the males, have a hard time finding good mate. If you see the hypocrisy in this situation, you'll understand why I wiped my ass with a page I tore out of the King James bible, in public, at a gay pride picnick. At least it chased away the christian (white) freaks with their dumb signs.

I live in Dayton and this group of ministers are virulently homophobic. However, their lack of endorsement is not why Mclin was not reelected. She is not very unpopular in general and alot of residents blame her for not doing enough to keep business here. Dayton is really hurting with job losses etc. She has also been in for two terms and people are ready for a change. These ministers are not that influencial outside of their groups. Most of Dayton wanted the gay rights ordinance and supported it. To be sure, Nan Whaley who also voted to pass the ordinance in 2007 was reelected this year. It is sad to see a gay friendly mayor go, but her support for gay rights was not the reason she wasnt reelected. Also, the new mayor is a human rights supporter as well from what ive learned.

It is my understanding that the Black community has many problems that are much more serious and urgent than gay marriage. Hopefully, at some point, the religious leaders will get their shit together and start focusing on those problems instead of the Evil Gay Bogeyman.
