SLC Council OKs Gay Rights Ordinance

The Salk Lake City council unanimously approved a non-discrimination ordinance Tuesday night with support from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The ordinance, a first for any Utah community, offers protections for same-sex couples in medical care and hospital visitation, in addition to housing and employment protections, and insurance rights for a partner.

Support from the Mormon Church may have been the decisive factor in the overwhelming support for the non-discrimination ordinance, according to the Associated Press .

“Utah lawmakers tend to quickly fall in line when the influential church makes a rare foray into legislative politics,” the AP reported. “So Tuesday's action could have broad reaching effects in this highly conservative state where more than 80 percent of lawmakers and the governor are church members.”

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints issued a statement at Tuesday night’s Salt Lake City council meeting in support of the city’s proposed non-discrimination ordinance.

The Mormon Church donated a fair chunk of the money used to help pass California’s gay marriage ban last November. Despite its support for the ordinance, the church continues to oppose marriage equality.

"We are not anti-gay, we are pro-marriage between a man and a woman. And there's a huge difference between those two points," Elder L. Whitney Clayton, of the Presidency of the Quorum of the Seventy told KSL News.

The church issued a statement saying it "does not object to rights for same-sex couples regarding hospitalization and medical care, fair housing and employment rights or probate rights."

If you want to know what Mormons think about this action by their church, check out the comments in The Deseret News, a Mormon newspaper: http://www.deseretnews.com/user/comments/705343621/SLC-council-OKs-gay-rights-policies.html?pg=1 Regardless of the church's official position, it is clear that most Mormons still really, really hate gays.

Something is better than nothing. Sitting in the middle of the bus is better than last row, which is where we in Florida are allowed to ride. A Florida ENDA bill has just been reintroduced in our legislature. Last year it couldn't even get a committee hearing. We'll see what happens this time around.

i'm happy it passed, but hopefully not because of the LDS approval, because it's just bread crumbs. they are just trying divert attention away from their involvement in Prop 8 and NOM. It's no different than when they begrudgingly allowed blacks to serve in the priesthood to avoid govt. intervention. lets see them do something for all the homeless LGBT youth who have been thrown out of their homes because the are an abomination in the eyes of their church. and why did Advocate admit the following from the churchs speach: "The Church supports this ordinance because it is fair and reasonable and does not do violence to the institution of marriage," Otterson said.

Overheard at a recent meeting of the Quorum of the Twelve: "Brethren: As you know we've got a huge mess on our hands with our participation in Prop 8. Now another issue has popped up. The Salt Lake City Council has the votes to pass an ordinance to give the homoshezuals some "protections". It appears we won't be able to stop this, so let's use this to our advantage. Since it is just a couple of crumbs, I propose that we come out in full support of the ordinance so we can hold this up as proof that we hold no animosity towards the homoshezuals. This would be a huge PR move for us. Meanwhile, we've been in contact with Provo and Orem City Councils and thankfully it looks like they have no inclination to pass similar measures. Meanwhile Brother Boyd, please get with your contacts in St. George and Ogden to ensure they don't get any ideas over there. We've already received confirmation from our members on the Legislature that this won't go statewide. All those in favor of this proposal, show by the uplifted hand. Thank you. Next agenda item: Additional funds for NOM to stop marriage in NY."

Wow! It seems they're one step ahead of the Catholic Church when it comes to humane decisions. I can never understand why the Catholic Church comes out against health benefits for same-sex partners. (They did it in Detroit when the Big Three automakers decided to extend benefits to same-sex partners). After all, wouldn't God not want someone to suffer unnecessarily? BTW-if anyone knows the address to the Vatican, please let me know, I want to send them my Conformation certificate as a rebuke to their extremely hurtful and inhumane stance toward the gay community.

At newz4i in Arizona: I have right on my opinion like you have on yours, all I want is for our fight to have some results, and I think and it is proven that fight for Gay Marriage got us so far nowhere. If we lost in Main and California, what do you think will happen in Georgia or Arizona where you and I live. I am in control of my life, and I hope we can have friendly discussion and not a Bitch Sessions. We are after all in the same fight, but we can disagree about approach. Sorry if my approach is offending you.

I actually agree with Mormon Church. I know they were a big enemy of gay marriage in CA. But word marriage is not going to fly for us anytime soon. I would rather fight for the DP or Civil Union. I do not care how my relationship is called as long as I have all the benefits federally granted to heterosexuals I am 31 now, I been in committed relationship with my bf for 4 years, and quite honestly I do not want to be 60 and be able to marry. We need to fight for what we can get now and that is DP. DP can pass easy with anyone, and it is digested easily by opposition then a Marriage. Right now we have no rights, DP would be of a great benefit to us. I am tired of useless fight for gay marriage, I donated for CA and Main, and we lost. We need to focus on what is passable and that is DP, not a Marriage. Fight for DP now and worry about marriage later.

A turnaround for the Mormon church would be to leave civil marriage alone, period.

Sounds like to me that the mormons are kissing some gay butts trying to stop the bleeding, too bad they are trying to fix up a severed arm with a small bandage meant for scrapes.
